Item description for When Violence Is No Stranger by Kristen J. Leslie...

Overview
The paucity of resources for pastoral care of acquaintance-rape survivors highlights the invisibility of this growing crime and its largely uncharted pastoral challenges. In fact, more rape is by an acquaintance. Only 16 percent of such cases are reported; and because they are difficult to prosecute, only 5 percent of those reported result in guilt verdicts. Focusing on the psychospiritual effects of this sexualized violence, Kristen Leslie offers the psychological and theological tools to religious professionals for understanding the deep spiritual trauma of the survivor and how best to work with her to reconstruct a personal world of meaning, trust, and faith. Based on extensive interviews with survivors. Leslie explains the personal and theological issues they raise, what they found helpful from religious professionals, the images and metaphors most germane to their trauma and recovery, and how they coped with or healed from the experience of rape. An exemplary and important study in practical theology, Leslie's volume will not only equip pastoral caregivers and counselors with specific guidelines. It will also enlighten them on the crucial role that theology can play in the re-construction of shattered lives

Reviews - What do customers think about When Violence Is No Stranger?

Good Resource for Helping Profession  Apr 7, 2008
I read this book for a counseling class in seminary because our assignment was to explore a subject that we had no prior knowlege of. I benefitted greatly from the structure and content of this work and recommend it to all that are in a helping profession and those that work with children because sadly it happens there as well.
I thought that she did a good job of dispelling the modern myths about rape and giving healthy ways of redefining terms that are usually convoluted at best, ex-virginity, consent, support, etc....
One thing I did not like was that she seperated aquaintance rape without covering the prevelance of insest among children as being a very possible experience of rape across the board. Child abuse is not the only "violence that is not a stranger" for children, sadly incest is a real possiblity. I wish she would have covered this and then springboarded off into the aquaintance rape. this text is worth all the other information even though this important piece was left out.
I appreciated the sections on how to for a pastoral theology towards this subject of aquaintance rape because it helped me lay a foundation for a subject that I will be mulling over and re working for the rest of my life; at least I will because theology should be a lifelong pursuit and not a one time decision...

A great resource for caregivers  Mar 27, 2005

This book offers great insights into the problems of acquaintance rape. It provides a thorough overview of the problem, reflects critically on four cases, looks at theological implications (psycho-spiritual dimension), and concludes with practical suggestions on ways religious professional can minister to victims of acquiantance rape. A wonderful resource written with clarity and insights based on many years of experience working with this population.
