Drab Aug 17, 2008
Perhaps, if I had started with 'Secrets', I might have been able to see the good in this story. As it was, I found several pages of drab writing and then, pure melodrama. The story , briefly, is that Sophie, having to look after the motherless Carly, develops a deep affection for the child and also falls in love with her father, Eric, who having presumably treated her possesively, drops her and vanishes with Carly. But Sophie's love for Carly continues to burn brightly and her love for Eric does not die out- remains in embers. When Carly calls for Sophie, she runs to her assistance, practically shrugging off the opportunity for a new life with Matt. Eric comes on the scene and attempts to take both Carly and Sophie to eternity by dragging them over the edge of the roof of their dwelling, but Matt saves Carly and Sophie. In the process he earns the ill-will of Carly who, despite everything, is deeply attached to her father. Towards the end Carly realizes that she will have to accept the new relationship between Sophie and Matt.If the story had elaborated on the dawn of this knowledge in Carly's mind and the process of this enlightenment, the novel would have been more satisfactory. But it does not. Carly comes off as possesive and control-inclined as Eric. What makes her change? There is no clue. There are questions about God's role in human affairs for which no theology has found an answer. And on the problem of the innocent suffering, is there any explanation other than the Hindu doctrine of "Karma"? So why paint the problem in an obviously Christian -oriented novel as 'Echoes' is? To leave it unanswered?
Nail biter! Jan 25, 2008
This book got surprisingly intense mid way through! It was a little bit mysterious and definitely kept me reading. I'm glad I bought it.
Not to be missed! Dec 11, 2007
Kristen Heitzmann's concluding story, Echoes which follows the remarkable Secrets and Unforgotten is both draining and uplifting. This story delves deeply in to the heart and mind of a women almost consumed by the "love" of a charismatic yet emotionally unhealthy man. Sofie's journey is painful and agonisingly real as she searches for truth and healing. Matt is also deeply troubled by his past, burdened with anger and bitterness against his unforgiving father and attempting to assuage his own guilt by saving others. Seamlessly woven around Matt and Sofie's story is the ongoing tale of Lance's love for Rese and his battle to win back her trust while coming to terms with his God-given gift of healing. Every single character in this story is drawn with great depth and dimension, showcasing Kirsten's exceptional talent. I was drawn to each one and shared their heartaches and joys as if I was rooming at the villa.
My expectations are sky high each time I open a Kristen Heitzmann novel. I am delighted to say Kristen has managed to exceed those expectations every time and Echoes is no exception. Do not miss this compelling series!
