Tactics is a great book on an apologetic approach that you will actually use. Gregory Koukl has done a great job outlining a plan that is easy to use and very effective.
Most apologetic books outline arguments that you commonly run into, but very little is said about style and presentation. This book takes the opposite approach and focuses on style and asking questions rather than detailed arguments. The approach is perfect for today's world, where the "Hand Out Tons of Tracts" and the "Beat People With The Bible" philosophies of old have ceased to work.
Some of the things I really appreciated about this work includes the personal anecdotes and the care that the author takes to exhort the reader to present himself well. Very well thought out book and highly recommended to any Christian, especially pastors, evangelists, and small group leaders.
On a side note, this book is also an excellent approach on dealing with fellow Christians when discussing secondary (or tertiary) doctrine issues. Would be very helpful for anyone engaged in this type of argument to heed the advice in this book.
Very useful resource May 25, 2010
This book is a solid foundation for being able to speak with others about any controversial topic while staying level headed. It shows methods for better communication and expression, though it is focused on Christian apologetics. I have not found it to be a good resource for answering common questions as much learning how to have how to have the conversation. Strongly suggested.

What a great tool for learning to intelligently present and defend christian positions on tough questions in a way that doesn't automatically alienate the other person!
A Fine Tool for the Budding Apologist Apr 22, 2010
Do you have a loved-one who emotionally resists the Gospel? Do you have an academic friend who attempts to refute Christianity every time you socialize with him? Do you witness on college campuses or the marketplace and get stumped by the questions from non-believers? If you answered in the affirmative then Greg Koukl's (MA in apologetics) outstanding book "Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions," is the apologetic resource you need.
Koukl unfolds the biblical warrant for evangelism and apologetics as he instructs the reader to utilize some essential elements of successful communication:
- Knowledge (know your case) - Wisdom (rightly applied truth- an excellent tactic) - Character (Christians should exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit and fine virtues.
Be effective, be winsome, and have a contagious attitude as you speak the truth in love. The efficient and scriptural witness must be built on God's word as it conforms to the specific unique individual one is engaging.
One of Koukl's most potent apologetic tool he dubs the "Columbo" tactic (ask thoughtful and leading questions)
Forasmuch as Questions are:
- Non-threatening - Useful for they build relationships as they maintain the conversation - Educational because the apologist learns from his interlocutor - Ways to limit vitriol and pugnacity - Instruments that steer the conversation to essential topics.
The author instructs the reader in critical thinking and in some basic logical fallacies. Additionally he confutes universalism, skepticism, and evolutionary thinking including theistic evolution. This volume is strong on technique, facts, and addressing the heart of the budding apologist. "Tactics" is written for non-academicians in an instructional and flowing style; great for high school and college students as well as Christians who yearn to improve their witnessing performance for the glory of God. Applicable and Useful Material Mar 21, 2010
On the ferry ride to Izena Island, my friend Daniel told me about Greg Koukl and his latest book, Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions. On the way home, I read a chapter and ordered it. I've put it aside since then, reading only a chapter here or there, but now I finished this short, excellent book about discussing your Christian faith with others.
Unlike most apologetics books, this is not filled with facts, figures, charts, or dates proving or disproving any worldviews. Rather, Koukl offers ways to talk to people, allowing them to share ideas and explain their convictions about topics without arguments or bickering. He has simple methods to talk about faith, but these principals can really apply to any topic in your daily conversations. They allow for civility, even when your partner is not so civil. Methods like Columbo and Taking the Roof Off will help you in having conversations that are productive for the Kingdom of Christ. Tactics will help you be a better, more effective ambassador for Christ. In fact, out next Apologia group at The Harbor is going through this text.
I highly recommend this accessible text to help you discuss the important issues with those in your life. Or, you can ignore this advice and merely talk about the weather and sports scores.
