Item description for Survivng Childhood: Testimonies of Child Sexual Exploitation by David Dusster & Kim Manresa...
Through first hand reporting, interviews, and moving black and white photographs, this revealing work of photojournalism follows the stories of street children in Brazil-young girls who have fallen into lives of prostitution as their only means of survival. Though every girl's story is unique, they share common ground: almost all of them come from abusive, poverty-stricken families or are orphans. Many of the girls suffer from drug or alcohol abuse, and some are as young as eight years old. Leaders in the struggle to fight this phenomenon have contributed to this important book in an effort to document and raise awareness of a dangerous and abusive practice that claims more than one million children every year.

poignant glimpse into an unknown world Apr 29, 2007
This text has a series of images and text that give the reader some insight into the lives of child prostitutes who live in Brazil. Whilst this book does communicate the tragedy and sadness that accompanies abject poverty, it is also careful to allow its participants to be read as more than mere victims of paedophilia/capitalism, but also human beings with a sense of agency, in an environment who face a myriad of potential problems e.g. violence, abuse, poverty - yet still manage to retain beauty, humanity and a sense of hope and happiness. This book is a testimony, not only to the disturbing underside of capitalism and desire, but also to the ability of the human spirit to endure such trials.
