Item description for Your Invitation to Scripture: An Introduction to the Bible for Catholics by Kevin Perrotta...
Overview Your Invitation To Scripture is the perfect starting point for people who want a solid introduction to the Bible. Clearly and compellingly, this guide orients readers to what the Bible is, shows them how it was written and put together, teaches them how to make sense of it, and explains how they can read it as God's word to them and apply it to their life. Your Invitation to Scripture presents the Catholic approach to the Bible: how to read Scripture with the Church, drawing on the resources of tradition while making use of contemporary scholarship. Along the way the book deals with many vital questions like, "Did it all really happen?" and "How should we interpret the Bible?".

Most of my writing tries to help ordinary people understand the Bible and read it as God's word for today. In the 1990's I worked as editor of a magazine with a title that matches that intention: God's Word Today. Then, into the 2000's, I wrote and edited a series of short books called Six Weeks with the Bible (from Loyola Press). Each of these is designed for six sessions of reflection and discussion on a part of Scripture (for example, the gospel of Luke) or a theme in Scripture (for example, Finding Christ in Your Marriage--I wrote that one with my wife Louise). Lately I have been working as an editor on a series of books called Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture (from Baker Academic Press).
Besides writing and editing, I teach Scripture part time. At present I'm teaching an introduction to the Old Testament in Siena Heights University's program in theological studies for the Catholic diocese of Lansing, Michigan. Also, I'm teaching a course on the gospels at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit.
I've led pilgrimages to the Holy Land and am planning to lead another in the fall of 2010.
Church membership: I belong to the Byzantine wing of the Catholic Church.
Family: I have six wonderful children and fifteen absolutely marvelous grandchildren.
