Item description for Tristia (Green Integer) by Osip Mandelshtam & Kevin J. Kinsella...

Osip Mandelshtam grew up in St. Petersburg in an assimilated middle-class Jewish family. His two early works, Kamen (1913, Stone) and Tristia of 1922, brought him national attention and the wrath of the Soviet censors, who silenced him for the next several years. He was arrested in 1938 and sentenced to five years of hard labor; he died of heart failure in transit to the work camp. This volume is the major American edition of Tristia

More About Osip Mandelshtam & Kevin J. Kinsella

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Osip Mandelstam was born in 1891 in Warsaw and died a prisoner in a transit camp near Vladivostock in 1938. An Acmeist poet and one who avoided the political world, he nevertheless came to be regarded as a subversive and was hounded by interrogators. In order to preserve his poetry which became incriminating if written down, poems were committed to memory by his wife, other poets, and friends. He is one of Russia's greatest twentieth-century poets.

Osip Mandelshtam was born in 1891 and died in 1938.
