Item description for The King James Version in History by Kenneth L. Bradstreet...

Overview
In 1611 the King James Version of the Bible was presented to the people of England, and the King ordered its use in all of England's churches. In 1620 the Pilgrims set their feet on America's shores, armed with the Sword of the Spirit, the Geneva Bible. They were fleeing the persecution of King James and the official Church of England. The Geneva Bible that these Pilgrims revered had been published in 1560 by leaders of the Reformation. These translators were English refugees in Geneva who had themselves escaped persecution and death at the hands of Queen "Bloody" Mary. It was that Bible, the Geneva Bible, that King James hated-hated for its Reformation commentary and for its popularity among the people. King James was intent on ridding England of that Geneva Bible. The Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower would have nothing to do with the recently published King James Version. Neither would most of their Puritan brethren still living in England. These seventeenth century "fundamentalists" would stick to the tried and true Geneva Bible rather than embrace a new version handed down from a church they regarded as corrupt. Did you think today's battles over Bible versions were something new? You will enjoy reading the account of the development of the King James Version, and seeing the parallels to modern day Christianity.

Reviews - What do customers think about The King James Version in History?

Good Book, Good History, Great Questions  Dec 25, 2005
Rep. Bradstreet has a reasonable and easy to understand writing style. He has done his research historically and Biblically. After giving an engrossing historical background and using the 1611 KJV translators own words, he asks pertinent and penetrating questions concerning the KJV only controversy. This book is a must read for anyone interested in this controversy.

I hope that Rep. Bradstreet continues to write on controversial issues. He is a careful researcher, logical thinker, and lucid writer.

Proofreader's Comments  Dec 7, 2004
I had the honor of proofreading this book and found it very hard to do so. The content was so engrossing that I couldn't focus on the task at hand. I've not only proofread it, I've re-read it after publication, and I will do so again. The book avoids all the customary bones of contention found in most examinations of the KJV, and uses a strictly historical context. There is absolutely no textual criticism. Bradstreet examines the life, character, theology, and contemporary influences surrounding the translators and King James himself. The book is rich in history and puts things in a new perspective, unlike the expected haranguing heard from the KJV-only crowd and their antagonists.
Bradstreet takes a clue from Fox News on this one. He reports - you decide.
