When I was a small child, I wanted to be a jockey, but I soon grew too tall. Then, when I was 11, a fall from a trampoline changed by life: I ruptured my spleen and had major surgery. From that time, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up: a doctor.
My course never faltered. I graduated from high school, attended Bryn Mawr College, majoring in biology, and was accepted at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. When doing my obstetrics rotation and delivering a baby to a woman having her fourth child, I found my specialty. I did my ob/gyn residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. It was trial by fire. The program at the time was in a state of transition and we were short-handed and under supervised, but I learned how to think on my feet. I came out of that program well equipped to handle any emergency.
After almost three years in practice, I decided to look West for a more balanced life. I found a job at Lake Tahoe, with another woman. Shortly after I moved here, I met a wonderful man, and we were married. He always knew he wanted children, and convinced me that starting a family would be a good idea. I agreed, and being the successful physician who had always accomplished everything I set out to do figured getting pregnant would be easy.
I was wrong. I was not ovulating. I embarked on the rocky pathway of infertility, treating myself for almost a year. I got pregnant on Clomid, but miscarried. I miscarried again in 1997. That loss was devastating. I felt like I was a double failure--both as a woman and as an ob/gyn. I joined an e-mail support group and told my story on the Women's Health Forum at, a site for which I acted as an advisor and expert. It took me six months to get the courage to try again.
I conceived, and thanks to treatments for the antiphospholipid syndrome that was the cause of my miscarriages, this third time was a charm: after Pergonal, progesterone, aspirin and twice daily heparin shots, I delivered my daughter on 12/1/98. She is a miracle, and I am so grateful to have her. I now know how lucky we really are; in May 2000, I miscarried again, despite treatment.
I am still very proud of the -MD- after my name--I worked very hard to get it--but now it stands for more than -Medical Doctor.- Now it stands for something much more important and rewarding -Mother/Doctor.-

Reviews - What do customers think about Your Over-35 Week-by-Week Pregnancy Guide: All the Answers to All Your Questions About Pregnancy, Birth, and Your Developing Baby?

Read this book and get paranoid  Feb 18, 2008
I hid this book from my wife after 15 weeks. Each chapter covers something catastrophic that can happen to baby or mommy - a new thing to freak you out each week - how fun!

Even though the chances of these things happening are extremely small, so much time is spent covering them that you cannot help but become paranoid about how many things are already wrong with your baby.

Do yourself a favor: get a book like What to Expect While You're Expecting, eat healthy and see you Dr. regularly. You will learn enough about what to do, what to avoid, and what is happening in your unique pregnancy. Reading this book will just cause stress for the mommy to be and that's not good for her or the baby. I can't say it enough: DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!!!
Thank you very much M. Kelly Shanahan  Feb 15, 2008
This is the best book I had bought during my pregnancy. I really recommend it because it has the necessary and exact information you need to know week by week even better than my visits to my gynecologist.
No Help At All  Feb 11, 2008
I am over 35 having my second child. This book was no help what so ever. There is no useful advice for older women. The book reads as a personal experience journal from the author who sounds to be quite full of herself.
There are many examples of how busy she is and all the activities she involved with more than pregnancy advice. She lets the reader know she over and over how she fits motherhood into her busy schedule.
Save your money and time. Working women with children need advice not a detail account of the author's time mnagaement.
Not a read for older, smart, women having children because she does not address concerns except her own.
Fantastic guide for over 35 moms to be  Feb 2, 2008
We're trying to get pregnant. I'm 37 and my partner is 47 so we knew we had some challenges. This book is a fantastic clear description week by week of the changes that your body will go through and what is happening with your baby. Its helpful that the author was an over 35 mom as well as an OBGYN. She has a balanced perspective. Each week/chapter ends with FAQs and that was really helpful too. I read this book cover to cover and I also bought the Mayo Clinic book to follow during my pregnancy for more detailed information.
Maudlin and not-so-informative  Jan 22, 2008
As my pregnancy continued, my husband and I became happier and happier that we bought this book used. I'd purchased it because it received such high ratings but have to wonder--do women really enjoy reading other people's sappy journal entries? Or end-of-chapter Q&As from patients who all seem convinced that they may have irreversibly damaged their babies? By week 15 we stopped reading each chapter after its second page, which is where the relevant facts stopped. For example, week 26 is devoted largely to twins. Shouldn't there just be a separate chapter for twins, as opposed to giving no information that week for non-multiple pregnancies?

The information often seemed to be woefully behind, as well; week 25 informed us (assisted by yet another mushy diary note) that other people MIGHT be able to feel the baby move--which we had realized at week 19. It's too bad, since so few books are geared towards the over-35 crowd. But having to go online to find information about common experiences like round ligament pain, because this book is so devoted to uncommon experiences, became a frequent disappointment to us both.
