For those who like the Christian Element+Sci Fi Supernatural Nov 10, 2008
My first reaction when finishing the book was a disappointing "Oh Dear". I can't fault the author's writing - it is fairly well done. But the plot simply doesn't sell. The idea maybe...the whole event set in the context of a supernatural Demons/Hell vs Angels/Heaven is typical and not without precedent. It is nice to pick up a book and have it present Christian ideals and morals- and do that while leaving out all the nasty descriptors and adjectives Hollywood and the rest of the media world seem so enthralled with. But the shortness of the book perhaps short circuits its ability to sell the plot idea. Three stars.

This is the first book that I read by this author. It was so suspenseful that I finished it in one night and ordered every other book that she ever wrote. There were not too many yet but I am looking forward to all of her future books.
Great Supernatural Read. Dec 19, 2007
Kathryn Mackel is a great writer. This is the second book of hers that I have read (Vanished being the 1st). It is a book about a woman Susan who returns to Colorado to help take care of her estranged father after an accident and also after her own son has died. She goes to help care for her fathers horse ranch. She deals with a lot of emotional and spiritual termoil and finds herself being thrown from a horse into a dark ravine. In the ravine she comes across a man in chains whom she releases. The man is not sure oh who he is or how he got there. What follow is a whirlwind read of supernatural events that keeps twisting and turning. I couldnt put the book down and cant wait to read some of her other works.
God's Cosmic Plan Considers Us Mar 21, 2007
In this Christian spiritual thriller psychiatrist Susan Stone returns to the Colorado home she had avoided for a quarter century. She's there to help her injured father, an Arabian horse breeder, but is overwhelmed by memories of her own childhood injuries and the recent death of her son. The hurt from the injuries and loss is aggravated by the presence of those she believes enabled them. Unable to accept the advice of a new Christian friend or an old childhood friend who is now a Christian, she rides to suicide but comes face to face with a realization of spiritual forces, a young man with a patterned back scar. An abused teen? Or is it a demon?
A premise of this novel is based on an interesting (and, I think, harmless) speculation tying together some scripture, history and archeology.
I am amazed by the forces God puts into place, in friends, in spiritual agents, in natural events, to bring us to healing, to forgiveness, to wisdom, to his presence, and I am thankful for reminders such as this novel. I am encouraged by the model of Dr. Stone's Christian friends who were steadfast and who were courageous in action whatever the cost.
The Hidden is a heart-wrenching and scary novel in a clean, accessible style detailing believable characters.
I'm so glad I found this author Dec 16, 2006
Kathryn Mackel is a highly talented Christian writer. Not since Frank Peretti have I found a writer that draws me in with chills, thrills and the power of Christ. Over the past month I have been able to get a hold of all of her published books and have quickly devoured them in the space of a night.
The Hidden is another one of her books that I simply could not put down.
I spent quite a bit of the beginning of this novel not like Dr. Susan Stone very much but as Mackel developed her character I was more and more moved by her struggles. In fact, I didn't care for many of the characters in the beginning of the story but as their depths were exposed I had a greater understanding of why they behaved the way they did. And this made all the difference.
For people who love to be on the edge of their seats while reading a novel with a Christian world view - I highly recommend picking up a copy of any Kathry Mackel book. The Hidden is a good start because it's a stand alone novel. Give it a try!
