Item description for Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes by Katarina Schuth...

Overview
During the past twenty years, and continuing at an increasing rate, individual priests and lay ministers have been asked to serve multiple parishes. Schuth looks at models of leadership that contribute to vital parishes as well as factors that might lead to the diminishment of vibrant parish life. Readers hear the voices of pastors as they express the rewards and challenges of serving more than one parish. But Katarina Schuth does far more than a statistical analysis of this emerging model of parish ministry. Through extensive research and interviews with pastors, she looks at models of leadership that contribute to vital parishes as well as factors that might lead to the diminishment of vibrant parish life. In Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes, we hear the voices of pastors as they express the rewards and challenges of serving more than one parish. These voices serve to guide and support the growing number of ministers who serve multiple parishes. Just as important, however, these voices provide insight for bishops, diocesan staff, and seminary educators as they strive to meet the special needs of these ministers and the people the serve.

Publishers Description

In "Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes," we hear the voices of pastors as they express the rewards and challenges of serving more than one parish. These voices serve to guide and support the growing number of ministers who serve multiple parishes. Just as important, however, these voices provide insight for bishops, diocesan staff, and seminary educators as they strive to meet the special needs of these ministers and the people the serve.

Reviews - What do customers think about Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes?

Thoughtful, fact-based examination of a changing religious dynamic.  Mar 4, 2007
Written by Katarina Schuth (Endowed Chair for the Social Scientific Study of Religion, Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity, University of St. Thomas), Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes is a serious-minded examination of the recent and growing trend of priests who necessarily take responsibility for serving multiple parishes. Drawn heavily from extensive interviews, Priestly Ministry in Multiple Parishes covers common recurring patterns in such service, repercussions in ministerial responsibilities and levels of satisfaction, recommendations for improving the morale of priests, recommendations for seminaries, diocesan models for multiple parish ministry, and much more. Extensive appendices including summary responses from selected survey questions put to 911 recipients round out this thoughtful, fact-based examination of a changing religious dynamic.

Not Just for Clergy  Jan 11, 2007
Catholic laity seldom think about the complexity of a decision to close a church or assign a single pastor to more than one parish until they experience or read about the anger, resentment, and sense of loss these changes bring to parishioners. What we fail to realize is the effect this "redistricting" has on priests, the subject of Katarina Schuth's research described in "Priestly Ministry." For many years a teacher of seminarians, Schuth based her study on survey responses of more than 900 priests who serve multiple parishes and interviews of 70 multiple-parish priests in more than 10 dioceses.

The charts, tables, and diagrams are immensely informative, but, as the author points out, the main focus of the study is the priests themselves, "who they are and how they were prepared for ministry, the variety of services they provide, who works with them, and who supports them." The priests address practical issues like travel time, minimal support from their diocese, reduced or shared staff, ministering to diverse congregations, coordinating programs, and, yes, hostility, and turfism among parishioners dealing with unexpected changes.

But Schuth does not stop with a list of challenges. She shares wisdom offered by successful multiple-parish pastors; practical tips as audiotape books for long drives; and personal strategies as prayer, patience, time management, delegation, and self-care. She also summarizes the survey responses involving actions church leaders can take to better prepare and support priests who minister to multiple parishes.

Though the primary audience for "Priestly Ministry" is the clergy, individual Catholics would gain a more balanced view of the direction the U.S. church is headed by reading and discussing this important resource. Diocesan leaders might use the information for articles and workshops at the parish level to build support for pastors of multiple parishes and encourage greater cooperation among those they serve.
