Something for everyone Apr 28, 2005
What an outstanding book! On the surface, The Lemmies appears to be just an ordinary children's book (with smashingly good artwork). But don't judge a book by its cover...
I read it first with my 15 month old daughter, who was very interested in the pictures. She insisted we read it a second time immediately, just so she could take another look at the pages. She is still at the age where she grabs and bends books, so we had to be extra delicate with this one, as it's one I will want to keep for a long time.
I read the book again on my own later, and enjoyed it very much. Karen Klein's artwork is wonderful and must be carefully inspected to be fully appreciated, and Arnold Klein's prose is brilliant and complex, yet the rhymes and rhythm are executed perfectly.
The Lemmies really is for all ages -- a story children can understand with clever writing that an adult can appreciate. As I said before, the drawings are spectacular. Arnold and Karen Klein make a wonderful team, and I look forward to their next collaboration. Definitely buy this book -- it's something everyone in your family, regardless of age, will enjoy.
A beautiful book for all ages Apr 17, 2005
This brief parable by Arnold Klein is a simple, elegant tale with a message for children and adults alike. His lilting prose is well suited to a parent or grandparent who wants to teach a child important values. Artist Karen Klein's marvelous drawings not only complement the story perfectly, but are far richer than most illustrations in their attention to detail. Look at what she does with rocks, for example, with wonderful veins and shadings. This book is a classic!
