Overview
A journey of adventure, tragedy, love, and loss on the summit of Mt. Hood. In December 2006, millions of people across the world prayed and waited in anguish to learn the fate of 3 climbers trapped on Mt. Hood. The worst storm in the last decade was pounding the mountain with hurricane-force winds that would not permit the army of rescue workers to do their work. No one below could forget the last phone call Kelly James placed to his wife, telling her that he was trapped in a snow cave just below the summit. What happened next would change the lives of everyone involved and deeply touch millions of people who desperately hoped to see a Christmas miracle. For more than a week, the search dominated the news as family members huddled below, praying for the climbers' safe return. But the story did not end when Kelly James's body was airlifted off the mountain and the cameras stopped rolling. For Karen, the year after Kelly's death was spent searching for answers to what really happened on the mountain. In this journey of adventure, tragedy, love and loss, she reveals never-released information about the fateful climb and behind-the-scenes details of how the family coped with the shocking news.

Reviews - What do customers think about Holding Fast: The Untold Story of the Mount Hood Tragedy?

The minute I openedthis book , I coulnd'nt put it down. As a resident of white Salmon, Wa This story was gripping from the start. I remember when they were looking for the men duringthe rescue then turned recovery mission. It was a sad ending. This book gave me a sense of closure. Karen had a story book romance that so many of us wish we had ourselves. I recommend this book to anyone.

Inspiring and wonderful  Jul 7, 2009
The book is attractive to me for two reasons. One, I come from a mountain climbing family, and I lost my husband due to a drunk drivers actions. Unless you are someone who loves the challenges of outdoor activities, be it mountain climbing, white water kayaking, sky diving etc., it may be hard to understand what draws a person to such challenging activities. Or how family who are at home handle the challenges of living with daredevils as some would call us. If you are not a Christian the book may not be attractive since the author does speak of her deep Christian faith.

And this is a personal story about one woman whose husband was one of the men lost on Mount Hood. Its not meant to be a book about a group who climbed a mountain, but one families story. And because he and the author were Christians there is a strong element concerning her path to her faith, because of her husband. As a Christian I well understand the struggle of losing ones life partner and how the Lord uses the experience to help us grow in our faith and understanding. Thus, I think for Christians this could well be a wonderful book.

This is a review for Book Review Bloggers, [...]
Holding Fast is the story of the three mountain climbers trapped on Mount Hood in December 2006 and those they left behind. When veteran mountaineers Kelly James, Brian Hall, and Jerry "Nikko" Cooke went missing on Oregon's highest peak during the worst winter storm in a decade, the search caught national media attention. In Holding Fast, Kelly's wife Karen tells the moving personal story of her husband's life, the tragedy that claimed him and his climbing partners, and the search for answers and peace.

The book is an interesting read and an emotional rollercoaster. The first section of the book is devoted to Kelly's childhood and his marriage to Karen, setting the stage for the following chapters that describe the tragedy from Karen's personal perspective. She portrays Kelly as an incredible man of God, a loving father and husband, and a skilled and avid mountaineer.

When Kelly and his climbing partners go missing on Mount Hood, Karen and the families are there waiting for their return. After a grueling week of bad weather, dead ends, and failed rescue attempts, Kelly's body is discovered in a snow cave near the summit. Karen's life is torn apart in an instant, and she spends the next several months fighting the grief that threatens to consume her. But she depends on God for her strength and her faithful friends for support, and after a difficult journey she is able to find the answers that she needs, pick up the pieces, and move forward with peace and purpose.

I would recommend this book to anyone. The incredible account of these three men and their families was an encouragement to me. Holding Fast puts more than a face- a life- to the name Kelly James, and tells the untold story of faith, hope, and love behind the headline.

Hold Off on "Holding Fast"  Apr 21, 2009
Recently my local bookstore teased me with some new adventure novels coming out. I've loved adventure stories ever since "Into thin Air" by Jon Krakauer so I jumped on this site and ordered one of them, "Holding Fast" by Karen James. The reason I picked Holding Fast is because Mt. Hood is pretty local and although I've never climbed it, I have gone skiing there.

Well the book was the wrong choice because it is no more an adventure book then say Winnie the Pooh. It advertises itself as a adventure book through the extended title "Holding Fast, The Untold Story of the Mount Hood Tragedy," but it's really about the author. If you are curious as to what really happened to these climbers you aren't going to find any answers from Karen James.

What will you find? A lot about her, her feelings, her love of God, her inability to swear even in a book, the love her stepchildren have for her, the love her now deceased husband Kelly had for her, how much people love her art, etc.,etc., etc. The title of the book should be "Holding Fast, The Untold Story of Me and How I Handled a Tragedy with the Help of God." Now that would be a truly descriptive title.

This book shouldn't be anywhere near the adventure shelf in the book store but placed firmly in the religious department. I should have read the back cover reviews before purchasing it from this site. If you have reviews written by such literary luminaries such as Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach, Sheriff Wampler, and wife of country singer Alan Jackson then as a reader you need to "take the hint!"

I recommend that you stay as far away from this book as you can.
