Reviews - What do customers think about Historia Del Cristianismo (Historia del Cristianismo - History Of Christianity) (Spanish Edition)?
I give it three stars, and defer to more-knowledgeable reviewers to say whether it deserves more Apr 4, 2010
First a note on the Spanish in this book: When I read the reviews of the English version, I saw that some considered that book "readable" to the point of being a bit dumbed-down. In contrast, the Spanish version is quite well written. It will send high school Spanish students to the dictionary every few pages, but it may be just the sort of exercise they're looking for.
*** About the book itself: This book appears to be identical to its English translation, The Story of Christianity, Volume 1: The Early Church to the Dawn of the Reformation (Story of Christianity),up to Chapter 25, judging by the latter's Table of Contents, as viewable on this site. Afterward, the contents of the two books diverge. I'll give the chapter headings at the end of this review.
I agree with the gist of the reviews of The Story of Christianity, Volume 1: The Early Church to the Dawn of the Reformation (Story of Christianity). That is, that this is an excellent book for the novice, which I still consider myself, frankly. One of the things I like best about it is that it doesn't sidestep tough questions, such as how the early Christians struggled to reconcile the God of the Old Testament with the Jesus of the New. Similarly, it doesn't commit the usual whitewash of the defects and excesses of the authors of the Reformation.
For such reasons, it's valuable to me in my missionary work in Chiapas, Mexico, where so little is known about Church history that even university professors assume that the goals of the Reformation were the same as those of Mexico's Reforma. As an added benefit, I've gotten a lot of laughs from my chess-addict friends here by showing them that one of the sins to which John Huss confessed before heading off to his death at the Council of Constanza was that he enjoyed playing chess too much!
