Item description for I, II, & III John: A Commentary (New Testament Library) by Judith M. Lieu...
Overview These small epistles overflow with gigantic insights---from confession and forgiveness to "God is love"; testing the spirits to combating the world; the flesh and the devil; etc. Lieu, the current president of the Society of New Testament Studies, fleshes out how their simple language masks a spiritual profundity.
The New Testament's three letters attributed to John have always provided remarkable theological riches for the Christian tradition, including the assertion "God is love." Each letter shows how an early Christian author responded to threats against authority by recourse to the correct teachings of the faith and a proper understanding of the relationship between Jesus and God. Together, these letters argue for a bond of unity among believers, based on fidelity to the truth of God.
The New Testament Library offers authoritative commentary on every book and major aspect of the New Testament, as well as classic volumes of scholarship. The commentaries in this series provide fresh translations based on the best available ancient manuscripts, offer critical portrayals of the historical world in which the books were created, pay careful attention to their literary design, and present a theologically perceptive exposition of the text.

Reviews - What do customers think about I, II, & III John: A Commentary (New Testament Library)?
Commendable Contemporary Commentary on 1, 2, 3 John Apr 29, 2009
Judith Lieu, author of a fine, introductory commentary on Luke in the Epworth series, as well as an earlier volume on the theology of John's letters, here provides a much-needed, upper-level commentary on the New Testament letters of John. As with a number of New Testament Library authors, Lieu strives to incorporate technical considerations and recent research into the commentary itself, dealing with linguistic matters in brief footnotes.
More a companion for those seeking well-informed discussions on literary and theological aspects of the Johnannine epistles than a replacement for Raymond Brown's highly detailed Anchor Bible or Georg Strecker's scholarly Heremeneia volumes, Lieu may be read with benefit in conjunction with John Christopher Thomas on the letters of John.
