Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Juan Villoro is Mexico's most prolific, prize-winning author, playwright, journalist, and screenwriter. His books have been translated into multiple languages; he has received the Herralde Award in Spain for his novel El testigo, the Antonin Artaud award in France for Los culpables. His novel, Arrecife, was recently short-listed for the Rezzori Prize in Italy. Villoro lives in Mexico City and is a visiting lecturer at Yale and Princeton universities.
Thomas Bunstead's translations from the Spanish include work by Eduardo Halfon and Yuri Herrera, Aixa de la Cruz's story "True Milk" in Best of European Fiction, and the forthcoming A Brief History of Portable Literature by Enrique Vila-Matas (a co-translation with Anne McLean). A guest editor of a Words Without Borders feature on Mexico (March 2015), Thomas has also published his own writing in the Times Literary Supplement, The Independent, the Paris Review blog, 3ammagazine, Days of Roses, readysteadybook, and >kill author.

Hasta antes de leer EL TESTIGO, creía que Villoro era un corredor de velocidad y no de fondo. Sus crónicas y sus cuentos son extraordinarios. Pero luego llegó esta novela a mis manos y tengo que decir que tiene la misma fuerza que el Villoro de los relatos.

La historia es muy buena. Un intelectual potosino regresa a México luego de vivir un par de décadas en el extranjero. Volver significa reencontrarse con la familia, con los amigos, y sobre todo con uno mismo. Con diálogos que parecen pulidos y lustrados para el cine, los personajes son muy reales, pero las circunstancias que provocan o las situaciones que se ven envueltos no tanto (situaciones perfectamente creíbles en un país como México). Es posible que aquellos lectores que se topen a Villoro por primera vez batallen con su escritura rebuscada y erudita, algo 'snob'. Esto no es algo negativo, pues lo hace con tanto ingenio y con una sutil ironía que termina por acostumbrar al lector a ese ritmo.

Villoro es un escritor mexicano al cual leer. No importa si este es o no el libro para comenzar a hacerlo.

Esta novela está muy bien escrita pero siento que ha sido sobrevalorada por la critica. Villoro no es un gran novelista, lo suyo son las crónicas (eso deben saberlo hasta sus editores). Recomiendo, en lugar de El testigo, Safari accidental, o Los once de la tribu.
