Esta novela parece una parodia del relato del dean de Santiago. Hacia 1520 fray Miguel de Zuheros vive en un convento sevillano y lamenta su vida sin riesgos. El padre fray Ambrosio de Utrera, tesofo, le propone reiniciar su vida con fray Tiburcio, bajo su antiguo nombre de Morsamor. Ambos conquistan en Lisboa a Donna Olimpia y Teletusa, con quienes embarcan a la India y all defienden a los portugueses y a los brahmanes de los musulmanes. Morsamor se casa con la bella Urbasi y tras perderla marcha al pas mogol, donde conoce al sabio Sankacharia, amigo de fray Ambrosio. Decide entonces regresar a Espaa, y en el viaje de vuelta naufraga... Despierta en su convento, junto a fray Ambrosio: ha entendido el lenguaje de los sueos y muere en paz entre sus amigos.

Miembro de la Real Academia Espanola desde 1862, de una amplia cultura, en particular con gran conocimiento de la grecolatina, es considerado el mejor critico literario del siglo XIX despues de Menendez Pelayo. Su obra, centrada en dos temas fundamentales (los conflictos amorosos y los religiosos) se caracteriza por su correccion, precision, sencillez y armonia; consideraba que la novela debe reflejar la vida, pero de una manera idealizada y embellecida, eliminando los aspectos penosos y crudos de la realidad, porque es un arte y su fin es la creacion de la belleza.

Juan Valera was born in 1824 and died in 1905.
