Reviews - What do customers think about ARMOURED OPERATIONS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR: VOLUME I?
Well-rounded view of World War II AFVs Jan 25, 2008
This book is a well-rounded overview of armoured fighting vehicles in World War, primarily in the ETO. The book is not comprehensive, focusing on certain areas of operations or battles. (The cover of the book conveniently lists the chapters, and thus areas of concentration, probably because the book is sold shrink-wrapped to avoid any damage to the surprisingly good fold-out drawings of many of the AFVS discussed in the book.)
All in all a surprisingly good book. The paper, photos, line drawings, and text are all high-quality. This book should be a welcome addition to the library of anyone interested in tanks and other AFVs of World War II.
Well worth Buying Jan 17, 2008
I bought this book not really knowing too much about it but thought that the topics it covered sounded interesting. When it arrived I was very impressed with not only the contents, but the layout and colour profiles of the different armoured fighting vehicles. The book deals with a number of armoured engagements from throughout the war and the authour has gathered many examples from the different sides who were involved in such battles. Many are diverse such as The Soviet invasion of Poland,The Counterattack at Arras, The Encirclment at Minsk, and other more well known battles such as Villers Bocage, and Prokorovka are well covered. The profiles are truly exceptional where there are a number of fold out pages that show tanks such as the T 34, the Tiger, Comet, Panther and a number of other tanks either in a double page spread or half page spread. These are used to show the vehicles involved in the battles and the various units that used them. There are a number of simple maps to show the position and advances of the units and these are in colour which makes a nice change. The book is worth buying just for the colour profiles littered throughout the book, which has been printed on thick glossy paper for excellent photo and colour reproduction of the various tanks of the Second World War,and at a little under 190 pages is very readable. There are ample photgraphs spread throuhout the book to show the men and machines involved but not too many new ones that I have not seen. All in all this was a good purchase and once again I cannot speak too highly of the colour profiles which are right up there with any of Jean Restayn's offerings. Well worth buying
Perfect for a detailed World War II report. Nov 3, 2007
Specialty military libraries, especially those with a focus on World War II, need ARMOURED OPERATIONS: it charts all the major armored engagements of the war, offering color side panels of biographical information of leaders along with insights on different forces' strategies, attack plans, and events. It's an survey not to be missed: color photos, charts, and details provide all the depth and detail lacking in more general overviews of World War II battles, making its specific information perfect for a detailed World War II report.
