Reviews - What do customers think about Youth Leaving the Church?: How to Reverse This Trend?

Stay away from this "book" at all costs!!!  Nov 15, 2006
I guess I am not really sure how I came across this book. It showed up in a Recommended Reading list from other books I had purchased. I looked at the cover description and thought it would make an interesting addiction to my youth worker library. After reading the first few pages I knew I had made a mistake. First of all, one can hardly call this a book. It is more a collection of outlines loosely structured around several very uninformative essays. Only three pages into the book, you learn that the author believes that one of the main reasons we have lost youth to the church is the Devil. Yes, the Devil along with his legions of secular humanists and feminazis are keeping young people from church. Most of the book is filled with Fundamentalist catchphrases and outdated statistics including a chapter on 'cults' that serves no real purpose in a book on youth ministry.

Mistaking Dr. Joyce T. Henderson for an expert, I did not realize that her realm of specialization is Marriage and family therapy or that she does not have a PhD of any kind (she is merely the recipient of a DMin). I guess this serves as a warning to anyone who buys a book without doing a little research. The sad part is that the money for this book came out of the pockets of one of my parishoners who no doubt wanted me to purchase something of value with his/her tithe. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!
FAT people: faithful, available & teachable (from the book)  Nov 16, 2001
Youth Leaving the Church was divided into several different aspects of why they are leaving and how to prevent it. It is filled with quotes, endnotes and scriptures from several different books in the Bible. Dr. Henderson brings up a point from the Bible that makes a good point if it works. "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it"

There are many reasons given throughout this book, one of them that rings true to me and my situation was my parents never forced upon my attending church, like, my studies in school or respecting my elders. I wonder would I be more likely to venture into church more than I do now, if my parents had given me reason to go. The author also references how parents encourage children to entertain themselves with toys before prayer. It's sad to think there's a possibility that this might be true. What influences do children have to encourage them to go to church?

Youth Leaving the Church is a book for parents, teachers, and anyone who wants to help create greater values and a higher love of the lord within our youth.
