More About Joseph Pilates & William Miller

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Joseph Pilates based his concepts of a balanced body and mind on the approach espoused by the early Greeks. His books discuss fitness, health, and include his original exercises that currently sustain a worldwide revolution in fitness strategies and exercise techniques. Joseph Pilates has been nothing short of revolutionary in his impact on the world of fitness and exercise. You will learn in his books the original exercises that he taught to his students, many of whom have become exercise gurus in their own right. His carefully designed exercises constitute the results of decades of scientific study, experimentation and research into the variety of physical ills that upset the balance of body and mind. Pilates makes extraordinary claims about the benefits of his defined science of Contrology. The exercises shown in his original books constitute the breadth of his ground-breaking definition of Contrology, and are basic to the growing army of worldwide trainers whose teachings rely on the instructions contained his books. In his books, you will learn the exercises that Joseph Pilates recommended to accompany his basic advice regarding posture, body mechanics, correct breathing, spinal flexibility, and physical education. It is fascinating to study these exercises and to discover the origins of what is being taught by fitness enthusiasts, health educators, and exercise trainers around the world.

Reviews - What do customers think about A Pilates' Primer : The Millennium Edition?

A pilates Primer by Joseph pilates  Aug 28, 2008
outstanding book about joseph pilates and the pilates system. i use this text in a credit course for pilates mat at smith college
Respectfully decline  Aug 17, 2008
Yes, he was a pioneer in the world of health and fitness and I have enjoyed many personal gains because of my pilates practice--but this is truly a historical work to be taken as just that. I knew that this would be a "back to the birth" of pilates type of read, but I wasn't prepared for all the preaching involved in this book--clearly, he and I would not hang out. Despite the fact that he primarily deals with the physical fitness of business-MEN, with a bare mention of women's physicality; it is interesting to see the 34 excercises the way he intended, and there is something to be learned about how we can get more out of them, and new ways of experiencing them; but he even tells you the proper way to bathe and deal with the sleeping positions of babies in this book (?!). I kept reminding myself these are 1935 and 1945 renditions and it's representative of the time, but it's so antiquated he casually refers to one of his theories as "the nigger in the woodpile". Really? And I won't even get into his theories on how parents in their loving cruelty, disrupt and discourage proper physical development in their children which lead to undesirable conditions such as disease and masturbation.
Check this one out at the library, or buy it used and read it at dinner parties. There are only thousands of books about Pilates excersise that honor Mr. Pilates' fundamental contributions to fitness and his commitment to the ideal of the mind-body connection, buy one of those.
Mouvements Pilates très précisément décrits.  Aug 12, 2008
Ce livre est très utile pour comprendre les mouvements pilates;
sur la page de gauche les photos de chaque étape de l'exercice;
sur la page de droite, les explications et recommandations pas à pas, par le créateur de la méthode lui-même.

Le reste du livre est, à mon goût, une suite de redites sans intérêt.

Je mets quand même 5 étoiles, pour l'intérêt global du livre.

Pilates in photos and his own words  Apr 26, 2008
If you want pictures of Joseph Pilates doing a lot of his basic exercises and if you want a short explanation of his ideas in his own words, then this is worth the price. Nothing about his machine/s however. Just mat pilates.
Real Pilates course  Aug 8, 2007
I learned my first pilates mat on a specialized gym with a teacher, third in line with Joseph Pilates. Classes were really expensive and I started searching on internet for a video with the original excercises as the ones I learned. I did not have too much luck, until I saw this video and order it. It was the exact same routine that I was taught; so I left the gym and do them at home now. For any pilates course, you should always go to a licensed teacher first because if you don't you might damage your spine. There are certain positions which need help at the beginning and you can't do them on your own. After that, you can buy this DVD with confidence is really good. The purpose of the pilates workout is for flexibility,back problems and posture correction. They are excellent for herniated disk, I have two and after six months practicing pilates the pain was gone for good.
