Item description for The Seamless Garment: Writings on the Consistent Ethic of Life by Joseph Bernardin & Thomas A. Nairn...

Overview
A complete collection of Cardinal Bernardin's writings on the "consistent ethic of life"-his hugely influential contribution to Catholic teaching. Cardinal Joseph Bernardin is widely remembered for his leadership in the church and for the inspiring example he left in the manner of his death. But among his most impressive and lasting contributions was the simple formula he proposed-the"seamless garment"-to link the church's "consistent ethic of life" in response to a range of social and moral issues. This volume, edited by Thomas Nairn and the Bernardin Center at Catholic Theological Union (Chicago), collects all thirty-five of Bernardin's addresses and writings on this theme from his first speech at Fordham University in 1983 until his last address at Georgetown University in 1996. With a comprehensive introduction by Thomas A. Shannon, this work reveals the depths and nuances of Bernardin's thought as he applied the "seamless garment" approach to such questions as capital punishment, war, abortion, birth control, and poverty.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Seamless Garment: Writings on the Consistent Ethic of Life?

In-depth Coverage of the Consistent Life Ethic  Jul 20, 2008
This book simply offers a series of speeches that Cardinal Bernardin gave on the seamless garment / consistent life ethic. Starting with the original one in which he proposed the concept, he expanded on how opposition to abortion, the death penalty, euthanasia, nuclear weapons and poverty connect with each other and follow a similar logic. The speeches are a bit dated in that they were in the 1980s when worries about nuclear weapons were at a height and worries about terrorism were not as great. But the principles remain the same, and these are important historical documents.

This is from the Catholic point of view, of course, as one would expect from a Catholic Cardinal. For a book that is more religiously diverse and more secular, as well as being more recent, see "Consistently Opposing Killing: From Abortion to Assisted Suicide, the Death Penalty, and War" published in 2008 by Praeger.
