THE definitive book on Judaism Jan 17, 2006
THIS book is probably the ultimate companion to the BIBLE, never mind the book i wrote, which pales in comparison!
This book is also the saddest book since "Jude the Obscure" soley because unlike Hardy's protagonist, Kastein was admitted into the sacred walls of Christminster but could NOT see the fate written on the walls.
As he explores the unwritten commandment that Doestoevsky revealed to the world---Love thy neighbours but HATE the Jews---Kastein shows the rampant anti-Semitism that goes back to the times of the original self-hating Jew...Saul of Tarsus...yet he failed to see that the rampant hatred of Jews that was part of the German psyche at the time he wrote this book was about to reach its "logical" conclusion.
Released in his native Germany at the time Hitler came to power and in THIS country when Adolf became comfortable enough in his Manifest Destiny visions, this is the ultimate book for all those interested in how the Holocast came about.

I loved this book when I first found it twenty-five years ago. It could also be called a philosophical history of the Jews; or, perhaps, a history of the Jews through the Jewish IDEAS of each age; starting with the Exodus and coming up to the late nineteenth century. It is a very intimate book, stylistically, and this may turn some people off. Also, there are no footnotes -- it is not a scholarly work, in the usual sense. It is something of a tone poem -- a meditation -- on the historical meanderings and philosophical-religious ideas of the people known as the Jews. But it is a great introduction and/or refresher for each age that Jewish ideas have evolved through. There are no sub-chapters, but each chapter covers with love an era: the Spanish Golden Age of Jewry, or the Nineteenth Century Reform Movements, and so forth (titles mine, not his). But it has all the important people and ideas for the entire 3000 or 4000 year journey. When I have it, I will read a chapter when I need to refresh my memory about one of these historical-philosophical eras in Jewsih history. I have owned this book at least two -- maybe three -- times, but I don't find it on my shelf right now. This is because I am always giving my copy away; and then buying it again. It is a gem!
