Reviews - What do customers think about El Hombre Mediocre (Spanish Edition)?

Not what I asked  Jan 20, 2008
I requested the English version of the "hombre mediocre." I returned it the first one and the second I received it was again in Spanish. If you put the name in English of the book it has to be in English, no Spanish.
Excellent book  Jan 13, 2007
My dad recommended me this book and I love it. It is thought provoking and interesting. The reading is a little bit complex and probably you will have to read a sentence more than once to understand it, but it is totally worth it.
Not an easy read, but a very rewarding one  Aug 20, 2001
I was faced with the reading of this book by argentinian philosopher Jose Ingenieros in the midst of a Philosophy class in college, and found it extremely rewarding, as I understood that -as an idealist and a dreamer- I'm not alone in this world, but I am also bound for hitting myself against very strong walls.

The most beautiful part I always carry within my heart from this book goes like this: "The world will never go as far as idealists want it to go; but it certainly goes way beyond it would have ever gone, had it not been thanks to them in the first place."

If we all were geniuses, who would stand out?  Feb 2, 2001
Ingenieros is right: the genius is that man of superior qualities that surfaces at the right time and place, to lead people and to enlighten the world. The genius stands out, above the masses, and usually is despised or mocked at by the ignorant and the mediocre. The genius is always chasing an ideal. All this is correct, but there is a problem. The fact that one is not a genius does not mean that he/she is necessarily mediocre. The progress of the world may be led and inspired by geniuses, but it is the common man who accomplishes it: decent, hard-working and smart common people achieve social reforms in practice. Besides, to be a genius doesn't necessarily mean being good: one can argue that Hitler or Lenin were geniuses, but the results of their leadership has been far from convenient. Hitler chased an ideal, and not alone, but followed by many people. True: the masses are ignorant and hypocritical, and that's why they need enlightened leaders in every field. So, let's glorify the uncommon man, but let's not think that we all should be geniuses: decency and education will do for most of us.
A cruel truth  Jan 22, 2001
Jose Ingenieros really talks about a very touchy but inevitable fact of modern life, the mediocrity of the modern man in a modern society. This book is about how a human being can let him/herself be shape completely by the stupidity and norms of every day life "rules". It sates how an uncommon man with uncommon thoughts can be isolated from the rest of society just because of his/her views on life. It must be read by every person working and living in the rutine of an every day life. It does not isolate the uncommon man but it definitly can show you how to survive in a medicre society.
