Item description for Ignacio De Loyola, Solo Y a Pie (Spanish Edition) by Jose Idigoras...

The countless editions of this book can only be explained by the spell its reading casts from the very first pages. Tellechea's true vocation is to be a scholar, and he has dusted off a great part of sixteen-century Spain. In this book he goes without learned quotations; sketching the "essential biography" of a nobleman and a poor pilgrim, who walks, by himself and on foot, all the paths of Spain and Europe with the ardent wish of reaching Jerusalem and step on Jesus' footsteps. Techellea's voice is hardly heard in the book. He allows Ignatius to talk to people, to go around begging and eating "whatever he gets, whenever he gets it." Adults call him "the man of the bag" and children know him as a "holy man", though some people consider him a dangerous madman. This is for him a source of sorrow and grief, but he might already think, as Miguel de Unamuno, his fellow countryman, would say many centuries later, that "only fools are for real." Thus, he reaches Jerusalem and returns to Rome, which "is also Jerusalem," until an autumn day of 1556 dies "naturally," according to a witness. The account of his constant pilgrimage, surrounded by joy and sorrow, is the heart of this story, the brightest ever written about Ignatius of Loyola. We have a simple narrative, backed, however, by countless readings, out of which this picture of the youngest son of the Loyolas emerges as an honest, rigorously historical work.
