Reviews - What do customers think about Finding Neverland?
Neverland Feb 15, 2008
I grew up hearing Mary Martin sing the Neverland song on the soundtrack to Peter Pan, so this one is deep in my bones. When I was a child I saw the play Peter Pan when a touring production came to my town, and I later read Barrie's original play and a book version of the Peter Pan story, and then of course saw the Disney version. I was always touched by the fact that Barrie donated the royalties to a particular orphanage, and I love seeing how that comes about in this film. We viewed the film as a family after it came out on DVD, and I bought the DVD for my husband for Valentine's Day because he liked it so much! He always likes Johnny Depp. I was particularly pleased that my husband did not feel manipulated or tearjerked in any way by this film. The performances of the children, Depp, and Kate Winslet are all honest, sweet, quirky, and true, and what needs to remain mysterious does remain mysterious, and what needs to open up into the imagination does so seamlessly! Charming film!
Heartwarming Feb 7, 2008
A superbly acted film, Finding Neverland never really fails at anything. It gets depressing and morose, but it has uplifting and tender moments as well. Freddie Highmore could not possibly be any sweeter than in this film. Utterly heartbreaking. Johhny and Kate together is somthing magical to behold. They compliment each other so well. I cannot recommend this enough.
great acting, great story Jan 22, 2008
This is an autobiographical story about James M. Barrie and how he came to write the play and novel "Peter Pan". It is also about death and orphans: the English, as Oliver Twist by Dickens points out, had trouble dealing with orphans. Barrie had a warm open heart and found a fantasy world for children that appears to be timeless and universal. There is always a place in the heart of children for pirates, Indians and fairies. There is a real contrast in the emotional approach to death taken here and that in another recent movie:The Bucket List I think that both have good acting by great actors, but one seems to be about the "me first" approach to life and this one is about living with death for both the living ands the survivors. I think that both are "sentimental", but this approach seems better.
Unexpected blessing Jan 16, 2008
In the past 18 months, our family lost 4 members. This movie handles a difficult subject with warmth, honesty & insight. It is also an interesting portrayal of a beloved author's life. I highly recommend Finding Neverland.
A masterpiece cleverly disguised as a DVD Oct 22, 2007
When I first started watching this movie I was using it as background noise while I cleaned. To tell the truth I just wasn't that interested in how Peter Pan came to be. But it was the only movie left in the house that I hadn't watched so I threw it in. I'm not a real big movie buff, so I wasn't expecting much. (movies do so little for me) Within about thirty minutes my cleaning stopped, because I couldn't hear what Johnny Depp was saying. Ten minutes later I was entranced. I have never had "feelings" for a movie before. This movie was sheer bliss. I laughed. I cried. I give it two thumbs up! Rent it. Buy it. Be blown away.
