Item description for Uncommon Dissent: Intellectuals Who Find Darwinism Unconvincing by Professor William A. Dembski...

Recent years have seen the rise to prominence of ever more sophisticated philosophical and scientific critiques of the ideas marketed under the name of Darwinism. In Uncommon Dissent, mathematician and philosopher William A. Dembski brings together essays by leading intellectuals who find one or more aspects of Darwinism unpersuasive. As Dembski explains, Darwinism has gathered around itself an aura of invincibility that is inhospitable to rational discussion---to say the least: "Darwinism, its proponents assure us, has been overwhelmingly vindicated. Any resistance to it is futile and indicates bad faith or worse." Indeed, those who question the Darwinian synthesis are supposed, in the famous formulation of Richard Dawkins, to be ignorant, stupid, insane, or wicked.

The hostility of dogmatic Darwinians like Dawkins has not, however, prevented the advent of a growing cadre of scholarly critics of metaphysical Darwinism. The measured, thought-provoking essays in Uncommon Dissent make it increasingly obvious that these critics are not the brainwashed fundamentalist buffoons that Darwinism's defenders suggest they are, but rather serious, skeptical, open-minded inquirers whose challenges pose serious questions about the viability of Darwinist ideology. The intellectual power of their contributions to Uncommon Dissent is bracing.

Reviews - What do customers think about Uncommon Dissent: Intellectuals Who Find Darwinism Unconvincing?

If your ready to transcend materialism...  Apr 11, 2008
If your ready to transcend materialism then go ahead and read this book. Bill Dembski strings together a compilation of some of the finest writings about evolution and it's Darwinian mechanisms that you will ever find. Within the evolutionary scientific community there is great debate about hw the history of origins is to be interpreted. Uncommon Descent takes the position that matter, chance, and the laws of physics themselves are not enough to produce the diversity, uniqueness and complexity that we find in life.

First of all it is no surprise when one asks the questions "where does all of this come from ultimately?" there is no answer from the scientific community. Some speculate a "big bang" elevendy zillion years ago but what kicked it all off? While this question at first glance may seem obviously rhetorical it is oh so important. What ever cause the universe caused the laws and all of the diversity of life.

laws can cause themselves- although if you ever look at the enormous amounts of bills that are being introduced all around the world daily in various legislators one might think its plausible that some do. Laws, need structure themselves. Its one thing to say this is how things happened but its another it say this is where it all came from.

Modern evolutionary theory has no idea where the planning for the complexity of the cell and its DNA came from. The discoverer of DNA (Crick) in fact said that his best guess was that DNA was seeded on earth from space aliens.

In any event, everyone should read this book with an open mind. Evolution is still being debated everywhere especially within the evolutionist community itself. This book will have you convinced at the end that there must be more to life than evolution. Its one of the greatest reads of my life.
Disappointing  Feb 5, 2008
Written from the perspective of a leader in the Intelligent Design Movement, by virtually ignoring the opinions of Young Earth Creationists (Henry and John Morris, Ken Ham, Gary Parker, etc.) this work loses a great deal of credibility. It is obvious that Intelligent Designers make a conscious effort not to associate themselves with YEC's on the basis that the latter are "intellectually embarrassing." A 6,000 year old earth? How absurd!
The truth is that YEC's are the true leaders in the battle against the Great Lie - the Theory of Evolution - and they are the ones who will receive the lion's share of credit when this blasphemous theory lands on the ash heap of history, where it belongs - and where it is surely headed.
Insightful  Oct 11, 2007
The book offers a variety of views from people who are respected in their fields and, against popular opinion, bring out serious questions regarding the so-called truth of Darwinism and macroevolution. The contributors offer insights on the deficiencies of evolutionary science, as well as what seems to be the motivating factors for those who are dogmatic in their support of Darwinism. I found the book to be enjoyable and insightful.
Food for Thought  Jun 27, 2007
To me, there's more to life than is either explainable or predictable exclusively by Darwin's theory. Where did the first cell come from, anyway, and why was it so amenable to the evolution process? THis book offers several discussions as to the sometimes mistaken view of Darwinism as being a proved theory on a par with other theories of science, gravity or energy. Darwinism can't predict future interactions or allow repeatable experiments, for example.
Some authors have more of a religious bent than others but, overall, the discussions do not dwell on magical creation. The point is that there is something more going on than just shaking a planet full of dirt and 'evolving' Shania Twain and Albert Einstien. David Berlinski is particularly brilliant, well spoken and knowlegable. Search other of his writings on the web.
I'd keep a pretty open mind as to whether Darwinism, exclusively, can explain all the phenomina associated with life on Earth.
Outstanding  May 12, 2007
This collection is must reading for anyone who has an interest in thinking about Darwinism and well-written responses to various types of Darwinism. No cheap shots or half-baked arguments found here.

All are carefully selected pieces - and each is worth taking the time to mentally engage.
