A Useful Work Mar 11, 2006
This book is a great discipline. It has daily reminders that are extremely helpful. If you are looking for a good devotional program that will give you great direction, this is a good place to begin.
The FINEST pastoral devotional resource I know! Oct 22, 2005
As a clergyperson, I whole-heartedly recommend this prayer book to all pastors. Over the years, this prayer book alone has remained consistently by my side. In addition to the daily lectionary and collect, it offers a comprehensive morning, afternoon and evening prayer format: filled with prayers, creeds, confessions, and scriptures for meditation. Each day of the week is assigned a particular theme relevent to the pastoral office: commission/ordination, promise/responsibility, sanctification, confessor, pastor, intercessor, preacher. But the FINEST feature of this prayerbook is the anthology. This collection represents a culling of wisdom and experience from some of the finest ancient and recent pastors. I have been regularly "pastored" by this anthology...and what pastor does not yearn to receive pastoring, to be understood, to be encouraged and instructed? I have given this prayerbook to many of my colleagues and friends and I hope you will bless yourself by also obtaining it. God's blessings upon Rev. Doberstein who composed it!
Thirty Year Companion May 29, 2002
This book has been a thirty year companion that I have used over and over as a part of my daily devotional. Written as a collection of prayers for Minister's - with an anthology of material related to theology - I have found it relevant to my personal and professional life in the midst of my family, community and business. It is full of "little gems" of insight and "thought" that results in meditation and reflection leading to personal application regarding ones life and it's daily walk with God. Simple in it's approach, but profound in it's premise, it brings Biblical text into the reality of the daily context of life!
The Prayer Book for Anyone Who Ministers Feb 9, 2002
One of the besetting sins of ministers in particular is the lack of prayer. As a minister myself I know that from personal experience!
I find that it is so very easy to coast through life and ministry without prayer and scripture reading that once the discipline of prayer and reading begins in a serious fashion, suddenly one wonders how one ever survived without it!
Several versions of the Liturgies of the Hours are available and this manual shares some similiarities.
One drawback is archaic language ("thee", "thou", "fain") on every page. Yet, I would still rate this work as a four or five star resource because of the package which easily allows ministers to begin a discipline of prayer once, twice, or three times daily.
Another drawback for me is the collects. I prefer the collects in the Book of Common Prayer (I'm Anglican, Doberstein is Lutheran).
The psalter schedule from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer is used in this manual but is, in my opinion, inferior to the monthly psalter schedule found in the 1662 British BCP. I use that *schedule* while reading the English Standard Version.
The anthology for servants of God is probing and very helpful.
Ministers seeking a vibrant and deep devotional life will find this an excellent resource.
