Item description for Kids' Letters to Terrorists by John Shuchart...

During the final class session in A.F.T.E.R.-a school program designed to help teens deal with the trauma of the terrorist attacks in September 2001-each student wrote an anonymous letter to an imaginary terrorist. Excerpts from those letters are presented here, showcasing the range of emotions children experience and their reaction to terrorism. There is, peculiarly, in almost all of them, an absence of anger. Some are funny: "Why don't you come over here and teach the Boy Scouts how to live in caves?" Many are sad: "I just don't understand why you do what you do. Don't you know how hurtful you are?" But almost all contain empathy and hope.

Reviews - What do customers think about Kids' Letters to Terrorists?

Entertaining and thought-provoking  Mar 17, 2003
The range of reactions by the kids is amazing - from deeply visceral to highly philosophical. While not every letter is a gem, you will definitely see yourself in them and learn something about your own feelings toward terror and the people behind it. By helping these kids express themselves, the authors have lit another candle in a dark world.

After John and Steve made their presentation at a conference I attended, and after receiving a free copy, I purchased several more! I would recommend it for all ages.
Awesome  Nov 27, 2002
I have read the whole book, it's awesome. I have to admit some of the letters aren't that great, but some are awesome. I attend the school of the people who have the letters in the book, and this is my last year here. I hope you all enjoy the book! ^_^
great author  Sep 7, 2002
Mr. Shuchart was my teacher in the 8th grade (2 years ago) he was my favorite teacher. A great teacher, and person. i just got done talking to him and found out that he finished his book. and i havent read it yet but if it is anything close to his teachings, then it will be one heck of a book!!
Wonderful conversation starter for discussions w/ your kids  Aug 22, 2002
This is a very special, easy-to-read book that truly captures how teens are feeling about the events of Sept. 11th and beyond. Their words bring us hope, tears and laughs. I think the course that produced these letters must have been very therapeutic for its participants. I know that my sons (ages 13 and 10) really benefited from reading their "peers'" words and it has inspired them to write their own letters to terrorists. Bravo!
