Reviews - What do customers think about Stories?

John Shea stories cause us to find the child within and to sink into the kaleidoscopes of our imaginations and to play in the world of wonder. The stories all take one to depths of that inner place where the Spirit of God plays and dances. The images are rich and altogether Shea. His expertise in story telling is subtle yet profound. This is a rich find for anyone looking for the divine in the day to day . . . . .
Excellent! I love John Shea's work and use it as a basis for meditation  Sep 16, 2009
John Shea does an excellent job of telling the story and helping my heart to understand and a more deep and profound level. John inspires faith, joy and prayer.
A joy and an inspiration  Nov 4, 2008
It occurred to me recently that some Christian scholar should try to come up with a book on the joyful moments in the life of Jesus that would resonate with today's disciples. John Shea has not done that, but a number of the stories in this collection portray the kind of human Jesus I sometimes really need to imagine. "Shenanigans at Cana" is a verse rendition of the wedding feast. Here is Mary addressing Jesus: "Late and laughing you arrive...sweep me up in mock debate...a conspiratorial smile...Now, the teeth of our laughter blind the steward who does not know what we do, my secret friend. Your hour is the minute the wine fails."

"Goin' Fishin'" opens with Jesus and Peter in a local tavern. At one point, Jesus laughs and "hits the table with glee." Later, he smiles, "the smile that swept over the waters at the dawn of time, the smile that moves the sun and the stars." As Jesus tags along on the fishing trip, we see "a mass suicide of fish," many landing "in the lap of a laughing Jesus."

Set in modern times, "A Down-and-Out Disciple Meets His Match" includes a running discourse on popcorn. When the disciple says he could live up to his calling better with a more moderate master, Jesus replies, "You are a prefect disciple--you cannot receive my death, you cannot live up to my teachings, my father scares you, and you do not know how to eat popcorn." At the end, both close their eyes and the disciple opens his to find Jesus gone, bringing the story back to the opening quote from Luke's Emmaus Gospel (24:31).

This collection is taken from Shea's writings between 1987 and 2006. In the introduction, the renowned story teller and teacher of storytelling explains his process. Each story begins orally, often on the basis of a reading or conversation, though some are "riffs on well-known biblical narratives" and suggestions for homilies. With the telling, they are refined and ultimately recorded in writing. They are a joy and an inspiration.
