Accepting 'Authority'--A Conversation With the Author of 'Durable Joy' Jul 18, 2008
The last time I saw author John Sears, we were high school students in a small rural California agricultural town named `Wasco'. I was a senior classman in 1964 and John was a junior at the time, but we recognised in each other a shared awareness that life was somehow far greater than the social and cultural milieu of cotton crops and potato fields could offer us. John and I were both sons of teachers in the Wasco school system and in that always fragile period of growing adolescent consciousness, I discerned that for John, as for myself and a few others who stood apart from the herd, real life would somehow begin after our graduation into the larger responsibilities of adulthood that still lay ahead.
This past week I had the distinct pleasure of meeting John again in person (this time over Chinese cuisine with my wife, who is from China). After nearly 45 years apart and out of communication all during that time, I was substantially impressed by everything that I learned about John's own progress from that callow state of raw potential, comprising adolescence, into his present state of matured and fully actualized reflective awareness.
As with many of us, John found himself searching for personal meaning and actualized fulfillment early in life. This led him down a long path of discovery and experience that took a number of years to travel. It drew him into East Asian philosophies, down many religious side-roads, and through a number of remarkable theological explorations. At the end of John's singular journey of self-discovey, he finally found the source of synergistic inspiration he was searching for in the Christian God... specifically in the tripartite unity of God as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
John's book, `Durable Joy', is the summarization of his experiences on the path towards that ultimate source of all hope, all comfort, and all meaning that he found in the Son of God, Jesus, and it is a poignantly empathetic, sagaciously insightful, and spiritually inspiring chronicle of personal illumination that all may benefit from.
I myself evolved differently from my friend John in that I do not believe in a conventional God, nor do I place my faith, belief, and/or trust in any deity capable of being conceived and conceptualized by humankind. Some who are perhaps less broadly tolerant would accuse me of being an atheist, although that would be a mistaken assumption, since we are invariably only in disagreement about basic terms of definition. My concept of `God' is a far broader and more nebulous concept that that confined and formulated in the doctrines and teachings of Christianity. That doesn't mean that I am Godless, but rather that I simply choose to define my personal interpretation of the meaning of human existence using different terms, varying considerations, and diverging arguments from those contained within the Christian faith.
That all having been shared with you, I need to state categorically that I was terribly impressed by what John had to say in his book, concerning his own path to personal fulfillment through Jesus Christ. John's insights into the power of faith and the fulfillment brought about by accepting a Higher Authority (that of Christ) are indeed spectacular and illuminating...even to a disbeliever such as myself. In the pages of his book he succeeds in blazing a very compelling path towards accession of that distant sense of internal harmony and rewarding trust that awaits all who follow this same path chosen by my friend John.
Despite my own suspension of deistic belief, I am very comfortably able to affirm and commend the strong sense of faith and belief that has led John to share these thoughts and meditations with others. I am further able to recommend `Durable Joy' to anyone who seeks a higher, more fulfilling meaning to the seemingly meaningless chaos that for so many characterises our inconsistent and ever-challenging human life experience.
Knowing John the man, as well as John the inspired author of this worthy book, I am comfortable in saying that my assessment of his book is not just a kindly supportive gesture offered up by a friend, but a sincere appreciation of the higher principles and meaning that lay beyond John's words, in the pages of his book: a 'Joy' that he palpably describes.
`Durable Joy' is just that, a joy to read that promises an even higher joy that all human beings seek, but that few actually succeed in finding. You will not regret reading this wonderful and inspiring book by my good friend John Sears.
By Jove I've Got It!! Sep 2, 2003
I recommend this book to the babies who are just starting their Christian walk and to all Christians who need to be reminded of where their joy actually comes from. I always say "that the joy of the Lord is all over me" and it certainly is, but after reading this book I know that it's also all inside of me where I can tap into it anytime I want to, even in the times when I don't feel so joyful. This book willalways be close at hand. Thanks, John!!

This book goes into maximum detail of a Christians walk in life. Has very detail scripture references and reasons to find the joy in living a Christian life. John Sears had made this an enjoyable trip thru the Bible to seek and find Durable Joy, a joy that lasts. I recommend this book for new and seasoned Christians who want to lift their joy in Christ and make it a lasting relationship.
