Item description for Mirror of the Martyrs: Stories of Courage, Inspiringly Retold, of 16th Century Anabaptists Who Gave the by John Oyer...

Overview
Some four centuries ago, thousands of Christians died because they dared to refuse to join the state church in medieval Europe. Their reading of the Holy bible and their consciences led them to believe that church membership should be a voluntary, adult decision. These believers died public, tortured deaths as martyrs. Many modern-day Christians claim these persons of courage as their spiritual ancestors. Many of those scenes were etched on copper plates by Jan Luyken, a Dutch artist who worked in the late 1600s. Numerous of these copper plates still exist. Mirror of the martyrs reproduces 30 of those etchings and tells the courageous stories of these people of faith.

Reviews - What do customers think about Mirror Of The Martyrs?

Suffering of the Anabaptists  Aug 10, 2008
The seventeenth century book "Martyr's Mirror" told the gripping story of Anabaptist persecution in Europe. This book tells both about the illustrator of "Martyr's Mirror" and a number of the martyrs featured in the larger text. Overall both an inspiring account of some Anabaptist martyrs (even to a person such as myself who is not Anabaptist) and a book for anyone interested in the illustrations of "Martyr's Mirror".

A sampling of martyr accounts from Martyrs Mirror.  Oct 13, 1999
MIRROR OF THE MARTYRS is based upon a book called MARTYRS MIRROR. MARTYRS MIRROR, written in 1660, is 1150+ pages revealing the history of the Christian doctrine and martyrs from the time of Christ forward. The majority of the book focuses on Anibaptist martyrs. I do not recommend MIRROR OF THE MARTYRS as a prelude to reading MARTYRS MIRROR. I highly recommend it as a followup. It presents history about the pictures used in MARTYRS MIRROR, and presents them in the midst of 28 accounts repeated from MARTYRS MIRROR. It also gives a history of MARTYRS MIRROR's author, and the artist of the graphic plates. It is well written. 95 pages, beautifully illustrated .
