Reviews - What do customers think about Preaching: How To Preach Biblically?
Good beginning reference for expository preaching. Apr 29, 2006
I got this book because I was appointed to be part of our pastoral leadership team in church. Among the new duties I acquired was to preach. Our district superintendent required all team members to preach nothing but expository sermons. MacArthur's book was among the references suggested when I asked for preaching references.
The book itself starts with the very foundation of expository preaching: prayer. Then it shows you the differences among expository and other types of preaching and why expository preaching is the way to go. Once you realize the need for exposition, the book weighs on you the responsibility you face as an expositor and how you should always preach what the Word of God says. The book then devotes several chapters to how to create an expository sermon from start (reading the Bible and choosing verses to exposit) to finish (actual delivery). Among its notable features is the comprehensive list of references that will help the expositor do his job. This book is very thorough in dealing with the topic of expository teaching that reading it is almost like taking a semester of preaching in a seminary college.
