More About John MacArthur
John MacArthur is pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, as well as author, conference speaker, president of The Master's College and featured teacher with Grace to You, an international radio broadcast. His more than six dozen books have sold millions of copies worldwide and include more than two dozen volumes of The MacArthur New Testament Commentary series.
The son of Jack MacArthur and fifth cousin of U.S. General Douglas MacArthur, John MacArthur attended Bob Jones University before transferring to Los Angeles Pacific College (now Azusa Pacific University). He later obtained his Masters of Divinity from Biola University's Talbot Theological Seminary, in La Mirada, California. He graduated with honors. From 1964 to 1966, he served as an associate pastor at Calvary Bible Church, in Burbank, California and, from 1966 to 1969, as a faculty representative for Talbot Theological Seminary. Then, in 1969, he became the third pastor in the then-short history of the nondenominational Grace Community Church of Sun Valley, California.
His daily radio program, Grace to You, which is now broadcast throughout much of the world, began as an audio recording ministry to provide cassettes of his sermons to listeners. They were first broadcast in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1977.
In 1985, MacArthur became the president of The Master's College (formerly Los Angeles Baptist College), an accredited, four-year, liberal arts Christian college; and, in 1986, he founded The Master's Seminary. MacArthur also received an honorary doctorate from Talbot Theological Seminary[ and an honorary doctorate from Grace Graduate School.
Nearly 43 years after beginning in the pulpit of Grace Community, MacArthur completed one his own life goals of preaching through the entire New Testament on June 5, 2011, at the end of his projected target window, stated the previous January, to finish "some time in the summer." During the same interview, MacArthur projected he would complete his commentary series within another five years, some 35 years after beginning.
MacArthur is married to Patricia and they have four children and fifteen grandchildren.

Reviews - What do customers think about MacArthur Study Bible-NASB-Large Print?
The single best purchase I have ever made Feb 12, 2010
Ok, let me start by saying I bought this specific product for a Christmas gift for my mother in law. I have already been studying out of the John MacArthur study Bible for some time now and I would argue that it is a necessary addition to anyone's studies. This Bible has a vast amount of information in it. Before every book of the Bible there is an introduction that explains to you who the author of the book is, when it was written, who it was written to and why it was written to that group. The introduction also explains the basics of what you will learn in the book and then goes over any specific challenges that might come up when reading some questionable passages. Having this knowledge before begining to read the book makes the book come alive. Also after the introduction is an outline of each book. When reading the passages the top half of the page is scripture then the bottom half of the page is MacArthur's commentary on those scripture. If you are reading the Bible from start to finnish and you incorporate the commentary as part of you studies it will take you much longer to finnish the Bible but you will have a much better understanding of what is going on. I have been in Church for 27 years when I started reading this Bible, and it took me about a year and a half to finnish it and I can safely say I learned more in the past year and half than I learned in the first 27 years.
Random note, I actually sent MacArthur a letter last year thanking him for his excellent work (I never wrote fan mail before) and he actually wrote me back, very soon after I sent the letter, I was very impressed.
Not the best, but a good study Bible Jan 15, 2010
If you believe in biblical inerrancy, reform theology, and are a fundamentalist, then this bible is for you. It is well researched with plenty of great notes and good introductions to every book. You can tell that MacArthur knows his stuff. The large print is very easy to read and not stressful on the eyes. This is essential.
I have some complaints: for a large bible the binding should've been made a little sturdier. I have had mine a year and it's falling apart. Another complaint is that the words of Jesus are not in red. This is a pet peeve more than anything else. I want His words in red. If you like to write notes in the margins, you won't have any space here. This is a large book 8" wide x 11" tall. If they are going to make a LARGE edition, why couldn't the publishers have made it an inch wider and taller to give you room to write in the margins? This is a study bible!
I also find it distracting that MacArthur had to put a big letter "M" at the beginning of every book. It wreaks of vanity. What's he trying to prove anyway? Other publishing houses such as Thomas Nelson and Zondervan have better maps, more detail and more maps. There are several bibles on the market that are published by one scholar like this one, such as Scofield or the one by Charles Ryrie who taught at Dallas Theological Seminary; also good study bibles. They can be very good IF you agree with their biblical doctrine and interpretation.
You have others such as Zondervan's study bible or Thomas Nelson's, or the ESV study bible as good examples which were done by a large team of contributing scholars. It helps if one checks out the contributing scholars and see where they studied or are currently teaching to help you decide if you want their interpretations or not.
In summary, this is a good study bible. I have relied on his notes often, but I would recommend that it not be your only study bible as relying on one scholar's interpretation can make one quite narrow minded. I give it four stars due to the defects and compliments state above. In all fairness, I should note that I also have a Scofield and Ryrie study bible both of which have decent margins for note taking.
macarthur study bible Jan 18, 2009
i'm so pleased with the M.S.B. because it really does explain in depth the scripture. i read a chapter of the WORD and then read Pastor Macarthur,s review. It is really helping me in my walk with our LORD and SAVIOR. The M.S.B. is especially helpful with a weekly devotional that I present to our Royal Rangers group. I'm so glad i purchased it. Thank you Pastor and every one that helped in its research. Your brother in CHRIST, Barry E. from Pa.
MacArthur Study Bible NASB Large Pring Dec 31, 2008
I have numerous study Bibles (of differnt versions). I think MacArthur's footnotes are very informative and of a reformed bent. The NASB version is very readable and supposedly the most literal. I think the pages of the Bible should have been a tad thicker such that the next page is not at all visible. This is my only complaint and it is not that significant a problem. The binding had held up very well. The type is a good size. The book introductions are sufficiently thorough and understandable. I often follow his references from his footnotes, these are very good.
