Item description for The Miracle of Lourdes: A Message of Healing and Hope by John Lochran...
Overview Lourdes was once described to me as the "Disneyland of the Catholic Church," as "God's Magic Kingdom". I had to reply that it is the complete opposite. Disneyland is a commercial enterprise where joy and pleasure is manufactured and paid for. Lourdes is about generosity of spirit where true joy is found in giving time and loving service freely to the sick and those in need. It has nothing to do with magic or fairy tales and legends. It is founded on reality, a remarkable reality, historical reality, above all a sacred reality. -- From the Introduction To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the miracle of Lourdes, where Our Lady appeared to French schoolgirl Bernadette Soubirous, Father John Lochran retells the familiar story with deep insight and new appreciation. Lochran explores the history and meaning of the miraculous events in light of modern theology and spirituality and offers his own reflections on Lourdes, then and now.

History, memoir, and spiritual reflection Aug 16, 2008
Father John Lochran is a former chaplain to English-speaking pilgrims to Lourdes, the site where Our Lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858. His book is a mix of history, memoir, and spiritual reflection that highlights the significance of the person and place chosen to receive the messages of Mary's 19 separate apparitions.
The recipient of the visions, a poor child of no seeming importance, challenges commonly held values and signals God's "rehabilitation of the poor and oppressed," writes Lochran. Mary met Bernadette in a rocky recess that served as a pigsty and receptacle for debris washed up from the river. The author sees the location as a reminder of the "refuse and rubbish that surface on the shores of humanity, of the violence, hatred, injustice and oppression of our world, of the selfishness that dwells in our hearts. But it is also a reminder of the forgiveness and mercy God holds out to us." Lochran links the pigsty image with the story of the prodigal son, offering hope to all sinners. "Mary points to the heart of the gospel, God in search of the prodigal to bring him back home."
The 26 short chapters would make a useful resource for faith sharing groups or retreats. The book includes a time line, novena to Our Lady of Lourdes, and prayers of Bernadette.
