Non-stop action but with a heart and a brain Aug 27, 2006
These 14 short stories span the globe. From Vietnam to Bosnia to pretty much every other place there's been a war in the past 30 years. Non-stop pulse-pounding action. If you try to put this book down after reading just one story, you will fail.
But, these stories are much more than that. This is an author with a heart, asking the hard questions, showing you what the genre is capable of being instead of just following the formulas of the past.
Ling definitely delivers all the adrenaline that the best action/adventure has always delivered, perhaps even more, but he doesn't stop there. He asks the hard questions. He raises the standard. Once you start reading this book, you simply won't be able to put it down until you reach the last page. Then, you'll keep thinking about it, and you'll wish Ling had fired 40 or 50 bullets instead of only 14.
The author is ethnically Chinese, born and raised in Malaysia, currently living in New Zealand. His goal is to merge mainstream action thrillers with Christian symbolism and Chinese culture. It sounds impossible, but Ling shows us that it is not.
Ling always delivers fast-paced, relentless action. He can paint a character portrait in a few short sentences. His powers of observation, and his turn of phrase, are uncanny. He can easily transmit the striking images in his mind to your mind. Plus, if you're in the mood to listen, he can make you wonder why we do some of the uglier things that we do, and he can show us some things that may reaffirm our faith in the species we call man.
