Item description for Love's Strategy by John K. Downey...

Here are the best and most popular papers and lectures of Johann Baptist Metz, one of the most stimulating voices in contemporary theological conversation.

Publishers Description
Love's Strategy brings together the best and most popular papers and lectures of one of the most stimulating voices in contemporary theological conversation. Here, in striking prose, Johann Baptist Metz, a founder of "political theology," faithfully attends to the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of Christian theology. Using the categories of memory, narrative, and solidarity, Metz reflects on the future church, theology's role, and the vital questions of human suffering and hope. The task of theology, he repeatedly reminds readers, is to perceive the pain and suffering all over the world with sensitivity. Remembrance of the suffering of others, he says, is the basic category of Christian talk of God. A clear overview by John K. Downey locates the principal themes of Metz's work, organizes the various vectors of his thought, and provides a focus for reading and discussion. A unique feature of the book is its inclusion of Metz's first original programmatic article as well as a newly translated lecture on political theology and global politics. John K. Downey is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Gonzaga University.

Reviews - What do customers think about Love's Strategy?

Excellent Anthology  Dec 22, 1999
This book offers a very good introduction into the work of Johann Baptist Metz. The work of this important Roman Catholic foundational theologian is not as well known in the United States. Dr. Downey has performed a great service making Metz's thought and methods available to Roman Catholics in the United States. Metz's arguments and proposals represent important insights into the foundational social-critcal aspects of Christianity. Such topics as "the dangerous memory of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ", "the future in the memory of suffering," and the need for a real grappling with the theological problems posed by Auschwitz are some of the important theological questions that need to be addressed by modern theology. I would liked to have seen a longer and more detailed introduction and analysis of Metz's theology by Dr. Downey. However, his overall anthology is a must read for anyone in ministry and should be required reading for theology students.
