Publishers Description
Who Are We to Judge?

We have met the Pharisees, and they That's because we are all slaves to self-righteousness and judgmentalism. It's built into human nature. We set "the standard"--the list of do's and don'ts--to which others must adhere. Then we associate this predetermined behavior with righteousness and declare, "A 'Christian' wouldn't do that."

In this book, John Fischer points out that Jesus defined the truth in such a way as to leave no one righteous--not one. We cannot be made right before God by being "better" than anyone else. Instead, by recognizing and laying aside the Pharisee in all of us, we can embrace the grace, gratitude, and joy of the spirit-filled life.

Reviews - What do customers think about 12 Steps for the Recovering Pharisee (like me)?

This is a must read for anyone trying to be a "better" person  Mar 1, 2007
This is an excellent book as it points out how we all constantly judge people to either make ourselves feel better or to justify certain things we do. Most people are not aware that they are doing this that extensively, but they are. To make the best effort to eliminate this bad habit from our lives we must rely on God's Grace and not try to go it alone as we will end up failing and then justifying our failures instead of relying on the grace of God for forgiveness and the strength to keep on trying. We all need to improve ourselves as people and Christians and not compare ourselves to others as this hides our need to improve. Read the book. I am not explaining it that well.
A Book for Everyone  Jun 21, 2006
This is a book for everyone. In fact, if you don't think you need to read it then you probably need to most of all.
The setup of the book is a play off of the classic 12 step programs used by AA and such. It is a tongue in cheek approach that turned me off initially. But in the end I found it to be a very appropriate and efficient way for the author to organize his ideas.
Excellent Book about re-thinking Christian Love  Sep 8, 2005
This book is great at demonstrating that we can all be judgemental at times. John Fischer tells personal stories that are very vulnerable and hit close to home. It is very encouraging and convicting to think about loving like Jesus does rather than picking apart anyone who is different. He uses the 12-step recovery model to show that it takes some real effort and honest self-evalutation to move from being a person who lives to do everything "right" to a person who is forgiven and ready to give grace and love to others instead.
12 Steps for the Recovering Pharisee (Like Me)  Aug 9, 2005
This is a toe stomping, eye opening book and every Christian needs to read it! As you read, you will realize we are ALL Pharisees, we all judge, we all are critical, and we all fail to see "the other side", no matter how holy we "think" we are. John Fischer has presented great insight using his own experiences in life and he is a gifted writer. It is an easy read, written in language any adult can understand and his humor will tickle your funny bone. It makes for a great bible study or Sunday School book. I bought the first one on the recommendation of my daughter who was doing it in her Sunday School class and have now purchased 3 more for the pastors in my life - my son, my son-in-law and our home pastor, in hopes they will use this book in their churches as a bible study. I know this is a book I will reference again and again!
Whited Walls Full Of Dead Men's Bones  Jul 11, 2005
I highly recommend this book for all of us either caught up in or trying desperately to shed a life of thinking that keeping all the rules and regulations of our own making or the rules of our church leadership equals spirituality, growth and the smiling, accepting nod of God our way.

We pharisees love to judge others as 'worldly' or 'backslidden' when they don't measure up to our self-made rules. We look down our noses in arrogance and disdain for those not as committed 'to the work' as us.

We're a sad little lot of legalists, all the while thinking we're keeping the 'standards of the faith' and being the 'pillars of the local church' but in reality receiving the just and stinging rebukes of the Lord Jesus Christ. May we learn to be more like Jesus, less like the Pharisee (like me).
