Item description for Sermons on the Beatitudes by John Calvin...

Overview
Among the many activities which claimed Calvin's attention during his long ministry in Geneva (1536-1538; 1541-1564), preaching was the most public and perhaps the most influential. Public because, for many years, twice on Sundays and daily in alternate weeks, the Reformer stood before a congregation of townsfolk, refugees and visitors to teach, warn, appeal, counsel, admonish, and encourage. Influential because, vital as the Institutes, commentaries and treatises were to the defense and propagation of Christian doctrine, it was the Word preached and applied from the pulpit which above all fashioned Geneva's evangelical culture and made it the nerve-centre of Reformed Protestantism. This volume presents readers with a short series of sermons on the Beatitudes, translated for the first time into English by Robert White. They comprise Calvin's exposition of Matthew 5:1-12, Mark 3:13-19 and Luke 6:12-26. Five sermons were preached on the Beatitudes in the course of an extended treatment of the Synoptic Gospels. Begun in July 1559, this series had still not been completed by February 1564, when ill health forced the Reformer's retirement from the pulpit. His absence was to be permanent: he died three months later, in May 1564. The late date of these sermons, therefore, marks them out as a definitive example of the Reformer's mature pulpit style. They represent his very last effort to elucidate a New Testament text in the context of regular public worship. Translated into a modern idiom, this book will transport the reader back into sixteenth-century Geneva, where he can hear the Reformer preach on issues of perennial Christian concern.

Reviews - What do customers think about Sermons on the Beatitudes?

Throughly enjoyed.  Feb 18, 2008
A great addition to anyone's library. It is a good introduction to John Calvin or a delightful read for anyone already accustomed to his theology. Calvin is a great hero of the faith not a divisive figure of church history. The humility and pursuit of loving mercy that he proclaims in this set of sermons should contribute to that view, to the glory of God.

Serious Sermons for Life  Feb 6, 2008
John Calvin's commentaries have been with us for ages, but there is a growing movement to print his actual sermons (See Galatians, Ephesians, Job, Prayer, and now the first seven chapters of Acts). This brief book is more powerful than the size indicates. Calvin does not pull any punches in his sermons, you can see why people stood in his lecture hall and sanctuary (I have been there to see where he taught) for an hour to hear him challenge them and why Geneva became a hub of transformed lives. These are no sweet, light-hearted devotions. No, they are challenges to live the Kingdom life now. As I said he pulls no punch. This can bee seen in one sermon where he speaks to other pastors and says that the man of God who pleases everyone is at the same time betraying God. Wow! His point in his sermons is that we who preach, teach, and live the kingdom lifestyle will wind up offending some by our love, our grace, our mercy, our forgiveness, and our convictions. As a teacher and pastor, I know his meaning that if we try and please all people we will wind up denying the truths of Scripture. Calvin shows us the way in this volume to teach and to live the truth and let people either live the Beatitudes or betray God themselves. A very valuable tool for pastors and for families.
