Item description for God the Creator, God the Redeemer:Institutes of the Christian Religion (Pure Gold Classic) by John Calvin & Jean Calvin...

Overview
John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion is one of the most famous theological books ever published, written and repeated refined and rewritten by one of the most significant figures of the Protestant Reformation. His system of doctrine and polity, Calvinism, has shaped more minds and entered into more nations than that of any other reformer. In every land, it made men strong against the attempted interference of the secular power with the rights of Christians and endures today, hundreds of years after his death. "It was more God's work than mine," Calvin said of his "Institutes."

More About John Calvin & Jean Calvin

John Calvin

JOHN CALVIN (1509-1564) was perhaps the preeminent theologian of the Reformation. Known best for his Institutes of the Christian Religion, he also wrote landmark expositions on most of the books in the Bible.

Building upon a stream of exact exegesis beginning with the Reformation, MATTHEW HENRY (1662-1714) achieved a standard of applied analysis that has long marked his work as superior. He is best known for his seven-volume commentary on the Bible, which C. H. Spurgeon declared was "rich in analogies . . . superabundant in reflections . . . suitable to everybody, instructive to all."

Alister McGrath (PhD, University of Oxford) is the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at the University of Oxford, president of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, and senior research fellow at Harris Manchester College in Oxford. He is also a noted author and coeditor of Crossway's Classic Commentaries series.

J. I. Packer (DPhil, Oxford University) serves as the Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College. He is the author of numerous books, including the classic best-seller Knowing God. Packer served as general editor for the English Standard Version Bible and as theological editor for the ESV Study Bible.

J. I. Packer (DPhil, Oxford University) serves as the Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College. He is the author of numerous books, including the classic best-seller Knowing God. Reviews - What do customers think about God the Creator, God the Redeemer:Institutes of the Christian Religion (Pure Gold Classic)?

The Classic Theologian And Best Expositor Ever  Nov 2, 2007
If the complete Institutes is imposing in its size to you, get this one. It is the first third of Calvin's entire Institutes, and focuses specifically on God and His revelation and self-disclosure to man. Of God's absolute sovereignty, for example, he wrote:

'It is true, indeed, that if with sedate and quiet minds we were disposed to learn, the issue would at length manifest itself, that the counsel of God was in accordance with the highest reason. We must use modesty, not as it would be compelling God to render an account, but so revering His hidden judgments as to account His will the best of all reasons. In the same way, when the tumultuous aspect of human affairs unfits us for judging, we should still hold that God, in the pure light of His justice and wisdom, keeps all these commotions in due subordination, and conducts them to their proper ends.' 1:17.1

Calvin believed in the continuity between the Testaments, and when he compared the sacramental signs believers experienced under both testaments, he found more cause to justify his assertion. He stated that the Jews 'possessed similar symbols. They were baptized in passing through the sea, and in the cloud that protected them from the burning heat of the sun. It is said, that this passage was a carnal baptism, corresponding in some degree to our spiritual baptism. But if so, there would be a want of conclusiveness in the argument of the apostle, whose object is to prevent Christians from imagining that they excelled the Jews in the matter of baptism, that they did 'all eat the same spiritual meat, and did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them - and that Rock was Christ.' 2:10.5
1 Corinthians 10

Calvin, of course, taught that Christ was manifested under the gospel, yet affirmed that Scriptures in the New Testament confirm the typological import of Christ's intercession in the Old Testament. He provided an example: 'when He rained manna from heaven, had not merely supplied their bodies with food, but had also dispensed it as containing a spiritual mystery to typify the spiritual quickening which is obtained in Christ. Wherefore it is surely and clearly proved, that the same promises of celestial and eternal life, which the Lord now gives to us, were not only communicated to the Jews, but also sealed by truly spiritual sacraments.' 2:10.6
'I am the living bread which came down from heaven.' John 6:51

The sacraments of the Lord's Table and baptism into Christ can now clearly be seen as Calvin developed them against the OT backdrop as the type and shadow of sacramental union and communion in Christ.

'The term 'sacrament'...embraces generally all those signs which God has ever enjoined upon men to render them more certain and confident of the truth of His promises.' 4:14:18
