More About John Calvin, J. K. Reid & Jean Calvin

John Calvin

JOHN CALVIN (1509-1564) was perhaps the preeminent theologian of the Reformation. Known best for his Institutes of the Christian Religion, he also wrote landmark expositions on most of the books in the Bible.

Building upon a stream of exact exegesis beginning with the Reformation, MATTHEW HENRY (1662-1714) achieved a standard of applied analysis that has long marked his work as superior. He is best known for his seven-volume commentary on the Bible, which C. H. Spurgeon declared was "rich in analogies . . . superabundant in reflections . . . suitable to everybody, instructive to all."

Alister McGrath (PhD, University of Oxford) is the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at the University of Oxford, president of the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics, and senior research fellow at Harris Manchester College in Oxford. He is also a noted author and coeditor of Crossway's Classic Commentaries series.

J. I. Packer (DPhil, Oxford University) serves as the Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College. He is the author of numerous books, including the classic best-seller Knowing God. Packer served as general editor for the English Standard Version Bible and as theological editor for the ESV Study Bible.

Reviews - What do customers think about Concerning the Eternal Predestination of God?

Excellent Translation of a Primary Work  Aug 31, 2000
This work is a translated version of Calvin's response to Albert Pighius regarding the issue of the eternal predestination of God. Calvin deals with the historical proof (i.e. other theologians/writers prior to Calvin) of the doctrine of predestination as well as the biblical proof. The last section of the book is simply Calvin responding to the claims/arguments of Pighius regarding the issue at hand. This book is crucial to the overall debate between the Calvinist and the Arminian. Therefore, if you are researching the issues and miss this book then you have missed one of the best primary sources from Calvin himself. Another good reason to purchase and read this book is to find out what Calvin really espoused. All too often people assume Calvin espoused certain things which he in fact never espoused because they read secondary sources written ABOUT Calvin's view. Thus, it is crucial to read the primary sources. Another book that works well with this text is titled "The Bondage and Liberation of the Will" by John Calvin (ISBN - 0-85364-718-6) which is also available for a good price here at this site. However, don't miss this one in your research!
