Item description for The Systematic Theology of John Brown of Haddington by Brown John, Joel R. Beeke & Randall J. Peterson...

John Brown (1722-1787) of Haddington was a leading Scottish minister in the early eighteenth-century. He was a devout Christian, a gifted preacher, and prolific writer of theology. He began life in obscure poverty, without advantage of wealth, position, title, or education. Yet God favoured him with unusual gifts and an enormous capacity for hard work. Brown taught himself Greek while working in the fields. He became a man of deep spiritual experience with skill in preaching the doctrines of free grace and piety. A Compendious View of Natural and Revealed Religion, is based on his seminary lectures. It contains more than 26,000 proof texts and numerous exegetical insights. This single volume of Reformed systematic theology is rich in content and an indispensable tool for students, pastors, and professors of theology.

Publishers Description
Eighty million baby boomers are heading toward retirement. Some are retiring now either out of choice or because they have been laid off. Others will work for a few more years until their retirement plans kick in until they feel they can retire or until theyre forced to retire. Whatever their age at retirement they will have better health and live longer than their parents. And each of them will face these questions Do I want a reason to get up in the morning and be excited about the day ahead Do I still want to make a difference in the world They need a visiona goal that takes into account their experience wisdom strengths and limitations and gives purpose to their lives.Dr. Harold G. Koenig with expertise in the fields of geriatrics mental health and religion explains that the notion of retirement was in fact a marketing tool developed in the postWorld War II period.Continuing today societys image of retirement is based largely on myths such as things will get better when you retireyoull be able to do everything you wanted to but couldnt when you worked. In fact these beliefs can be harmful leading to emotional issues identity crises and problems with physical health.Citing current scientific and medical research Koenig illustrates how having a purpose motivates and energizes people in their retirement years. He presents a stepbystep guide to identifying a goal toward which they can strive. And he shows how striving for that goal in itself brings meaning satisfaction and a sense of reward to retirement years.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Systematic Theology of John Brown of Haddington?

Covenantal System of Theology  Jun 26, 2002
Brown's Systematic Theology is organized around the doctrine of the covenant, which few (if any) modern systematics emulate. Brown surpasses, in my estimation, the work of Reymond, Berkhof, and Hoeksema, though (may it be said) he lived in a different era with different conflicts. Still, Brown's systematics, based on his seminary lectures, should be read and re-read by modern theologians and laymen; after all, how many systematics end each section with words such as: "Now, O my soul, think what astonishing displays of Jehovah's perfections appear in this covenant!" Buy it, read it, live it.
