Reviews - What do customers think about Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther (Westminster Bible Companion)?
Liberal Theological Views-- Not for conservative Christians Jul 30, 2007
I have First & Second Samuel in this series and found it very well written by Eugene Peterson. I was looking for something with an overview of the books of Ezra-Esther written with a similar conservative position and was disappointed with this work.
It comes from a liberal standpoint and does not reflect my views, for example when Esther kept her Jewish roots a secret in the beginning with the King, Van Wijk-Bos writes "Today, in may Christian communities gay and lesbian folk experience this forced cover-up of who they really are. The harm done by compelled existence 'in the closet' is devastating. Esther, for example, has to be sure every moment that she measures up to standards she does not fully know and that are not set by the commmunity of her natural alliance. She is 'diferent' and must not let on to this difference at peril of her life".
God's Word isn't even slightly ambiguous about it's stance on homosexuality- it's a sin in the eyes of God. I of course am not advocating that people "stay in the closet" and try to "blend in", but they can come to the power of the cross and receive deliverance through the power released in the new-birth and renewal of their mind with God's Word. I understand this isn't popular or PC in these days, but God's Word is never outdated or culturally relevant-- God has created His own counter-culture called 'The Kingdom of God'.
Works like this don't help me with my message preparation except to make crystal clear to me that this same false liberal world viewpoint has infiltrated the ranks of those who write commentaries and Christian literature.
Please understand that i'm not trying to be overly harsh or critical, I just want to stay true to the teaching of God's Word and to let you know that if you decide to purchase this, know what it is first before you make a mistake and spend God's resources on something you weren't expecting. God Bless and guide you.
