Sorry depection of midway life - Good "Jesus" book Jul 25, 2008
One has to forgive the author for his sincere faith as a Christian. This book had very little to do with the outdoor amusement industry. I found the characters to be predictable, and by the third chapter a little disappointed by what you knew was coming; a "Jesus" pamphlet veiled as a novel.
A shame that the characters in the book didn't all become card carrying members of the Republican Party with James Dobson as the new "patch" for the midway. Perhaps a better ending would have been for the carnies to become preachers; some of the biggest flat store operators ever.
Disappointed. Try to find the book "Carny" by a gent with the last name of Lewis, a real glimpse into midway life in the 50's and 60's.
If you must buy it try a used copy; very used. Not a great tome on real midway life but if you are looking for a poorly done "come to Jesus" book it is probably worth a read.
I am going to have to learn how I can get rid of this book. The real "marks" in this story are the ones who buy the book, maybe that is the authors "G".
a flop Mar 5, 2008
writer uses tome to push for his btand of religion. the characters are transparent and are poorly developed. I found myself disliking the carnies in this book. a waste of time
Highly recommended reading Dec 6, 2006
This is a "must read" if you enjoy good books. This book was captivating from the very beginning. Though I am not experienced in carnival life, from stories I have heard it is a good account of the life of a Carney. Joel Cook has a magnificent way with words which adds to your enjoyment. Sue Laird

I found "With It-For It" to be a great read. It was a tremendous insight to the old "Caney" lifestyle. The characters were loveable and believable. It clearly shows that those hard working and hard living Carnival folks were not all "shysters and tricksters" as we "outsiders" pictured them. I hope Joel Cook has other jewels for us in the future. This truly was a Diamond in the Rough! Byrd Crawford
A look behind the lights Nov 7, 2006
This was an outstanding novel! I have great memories of fall nights at the fair but never considered the lives that made it possible. This book revealed the tightknit lives of a world we never see. Great lessons to be learned on how to conduct yourself in your own daily life.
