Reviews - What do customers think about Readings in Baptist History: Four Centuries of Selected Documents?
very good book on sources in Baptist history Jan 30, 2010
A book by J. Early Jr. "Readings in Baptist History: Four Centuries of Selected Documents" is a big gift to Baptist historians and theologians. This book does not contain all four centuries of Baptist documents but only the most important. The book starts from John Smyth's documents and it goes all the way up to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. There are no explanations and historical context for the documents. Also there are not much documents from the early part of Baptist history. If you want a better view on historical Baptist documents you need to buy this book plus H. Leon McBeth "A Sourcebook for Baptist Heritage". I encourage everyone who are interested in Baptist history buy "Readings in Baptist History" and learn from these documents.
Great Compilation May 8, 2008
Here is an anthology of Baptist writings spanning the last four centuries, from 1609 to the 2000 revision of The Baptist Faith & Message. Even in our day of online access for much of this material, having them all in one volume is a convenience that makes for more efficient study. Compiler Joseph Early writes, "Access to the primary sources is the key to a deeper understanding of the events in question. By examining the primary sources, the reader has the opportunity to delve further into an issue and see it in its original context and through the eyes of the writer."
Note: the compiler/editor Joseph Early does not provide any commentary before the documents, giving the reader the freedom to read the text on its own.
