More About Joanna Cole & Maxie Chambliss
Joanna Cole is the author of the popular Magic School Bus series, I'm a Big Brother, I'm a Big Sister, and many other award-winning books. In Asking About Sex & Growing Up, she provides a reassuring blend of practical guidance and scientific fact for the audience that needs it most.
I discovered in the fifth grade that I enjoyed explaining things and writing reports for school. I had a teacher who was a little like Ms. Frizzle. She loved her subject. Every week she had a child do an experiment in front of the room, and I always wanted to be that child. Grade school was very important to me maybe that's why I ended up writing books for children as an adult.
After graduating from college, I worked as an elementary-school teacher, a librarian, a children's book editor, and a writer. My first book was Cockroaches. An article in the Wall Street Journal inspired me to do some research. I discovered that there had never been a children's book written about cockroaches before. So I thought, why not? Plus, I had ample time to study that creature in my low-budget New York apartment!
Since then I have written both nonfiction and fiction books for children. In my science books, including The Magic School Bus books, I write about ideas, rather than just the facts. I try to ask a question, such as how do scientists guess what dinosaurs were like? Then I try to answer the question as I write the book.
Writing is hard work, but it's the greatest fun in the world.
Joanna Cole currently resides in the state of Connecticut.

Cute book Jun 5, 2008
My three year old like this book and always reaches for it to look through when she is sitting on the toilet. It hasn't done much to help her to actually get potty trained, so far.
Fabulous for our daughter May 28, 2008
Our daughter is 27 months old and we have had the book for over a month. She loves it and it has made her so much more aware than her older sibling. Wish we had known about these books earlier. We will be ordering others in the series. Thanks for offering these.
a big lap! May 23, 2008
this book is large! make sure you check out the dimensions. i just assumed it was intended for a little one's lap to read on the potty, but it's for an adult to read to the baby while in their lap.
It covers the long journey of potty training very well- trials and triumphs. very good description preparing your little one for the ultimate goal- using the potty exclusively.
my girl loves the i'm a big sister now book in this series, so she enjoyed this one immediately.
My daugher loves this book. Apr 21, 2008
I got it when my daughter was too young to show any interests in the potty yet. But it's such a lovely book and we just read it, again and again. I can't tell how much it really helped my daughter learn to potty. She just loves this book. So do it. The text is very soothing and the illustration gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling. :) My daughter is 3 now and still read the book often.
Great tool for potty training Mar 1, 2008
My 2 1/2 year old loves this book. It really "speaks" to her, and she loves answering all of the questions. Very interactive and fun to read, it has helped a lot with the potty training dialogue between my husband and I and our daughter. She has asked us to read this book every night before bed since we got it. I chose this book because we had previously bought Joanna Cole's "I'm a Big Sister", and loved it. I highly recommend both books.
