Reviews - What do customers think about Hear, O Heavens And Listen, O Earth: An Introduction to the Prophets (Michael Glazier Books)?

Rich Resource for Faith Sharing Groups  Jul 12, 2006
Though written for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in theology, this text has much to offer individuals and groups who simply wish to learn more about the prophets. The clear presentation and format that bear the mark of an accomplished and experienced professor work in favor of those who are not formal students.

Introductory material provides a useful overview and prepares readers for what is to come. The table on how to study a prophetic book and the chart comparing Jewish, Protestant, and Roman Catholic canons are useful references, as is the map of cities identified with Israel's prophets.

The first chapter deals with early prophets including Moses "the first prophet and model." Cook reviews the model prophet described in Deuteronomy as one who is appointed by God from among the people, called to speak the word given by God, and chosen to serve in a specific situation or time. Subsequent chapters discuss individual prophets grouped in roughly chronological order. Each contains background information, maps and photos of biblical sites, outlines of the prophetic book, and the prophet's basic message. Cook also suggests brief activities to reinforce the learning and afford opportunities for reflection and discussion and summarizes the significance of each prophet for our daily life.

Faith sharing or bible study groups might schedule a study of one prophet over a given period. Volunteers could take responsibility for various aspects of the study. For example, one might ensure that all members had the opportunity to read the appropriate verses before the meeting and another could lead the discussion.
