More About Evan-Moor Educational Publishers
Since 1979, Evan-Moor Educational Publishers has provided educators with practical, creative, and engaging PreK–8 materials to support and enrich the core curriculum.
We strive to produce educational materials that are aligned with current standards and best educational practices—and with student interests and motivations. We pride ourselves on our ability to create products that not only build and reinforce basic and complex skills, but that develop a curiosity about the subjects in which those skills are taught.
When teaching colleagues and friends Joy Evans and Jo Ellen Moore created their first handwritten book to motivate struggling students in their classroom, they had no idea that they were embarking on a very successful career in educational publishing.
In the 1970s, Joy and Jo Ellen were team teaching in a Title I school in California and developing their own supplemental resources to inspire students in their classroom to learn basic skills. After multiple rejection letters from publishers, Joy and Jo Ellen decided to independently publish their first six titles. Partnering with Joy’s brother, Bill Evans, the trio founded Evan-Moor Educational Publishers in 1979.
Joy and Jo Ellen taught the first few years while Bill practiced law. Bill and Joy’s parents, Olive and Earl, volunteered their garage as a warehouse and shipping facility. Olive and Earl also served as the first sales team, visiting local stores and book clubs—and eventually the grassroots efforts took off.
Today, Evan-Moor Educational Publishers operates with the same family spirit and enthusiasm that the company was founded on nearly 35 years ago. While Evan-Moor sadly said goodbye to Joy Evans in 2012, the passion and energy that Joy, Jo Ellen, and Bill infused into Evan-Moor has propelled the company to long-term success.
Joy and Jo Ellen’s inaugural, hand-crafted book has led to more than 500 titles, as well as digital resources, e-books, center kits, RTI resources, and an interactive learning platform for 1:1 learning models. And today, as in the early days, Evan-Moor continues to develop resources and technologies with a clear, unwavering focus on the goal of helping children learn.
Reviews - What do customers think about Giant Science Resource Book: Grades 1-6?
Awesome book! Dec 28, 2008
We love this book. It gives a few pages for topics but it is awesome to build on and my son loves to get his science book out!
I really like this book and I'm very glad that we bought it.
A Handy Reference for Science Reproducibles Dec 9, 2008
Plain black and white outline images, diagrams, charts, flashcards, etc. fill this book. Each page is good for coloring in and then making notebooking pages or minibooks for a lapbook. A great supplement book to any science curriculum for elementary grades. I'd say it's too simplistic for grades 5-6.
Will this work in my classroom? Sep 30, 2008
I ordered this book to use as a resource for planning science lessons. I teach students in grades K-2 and this book is designed for students from the 1st through the 6th grade. I was hoping that there would be quite a bit for the young students in my classes. One of the things I was excited about was the fact that this book covers all branches of science--life science, earth science, and physical science. After receiving the book, I took the time to really look through it and see what could be used in my class. There are definitely sections that are geared toward early elementary students and other sections that are geared toward the upper levels. Unfortunately, there were not materials for each unit that would span all grade levels. If there were, this would allow for differentiation for the struggling and also the gifted students in the classroom. In addition, I do have some other products from Evan-Moor (such as Plants, Grades 1-3) and some of the reproducibles in the Resource Book are identical to what is found in the individual unit books. Overall, I am pleased with content in the resource book. However, the usefulness of the book depends on what units you are teaching to a particular grade--this book will most likely not be the only source of supplemental material you will need.
Amazing resource for elementary science! Apr 16, 2008
I agree with the other reviewer, buy the E-Book from Evan-Moor instead of the book version. This is a fabulous, all encompassing resource for 1-6 science. You could even use this book to structure your science studies for the grade levels.
This is the first resource I've seen that is budget efficient and not dumbed down for children. It is age-appropriate and uses correct scientific terms instead of describing something simply as if a child could not grasp the concept of an invertebrate. This could be the core of your child's science notebook.
Good for supplement Jul 19, 2004
This book would be good for supplemental material. However, I would recommend getting the digital addition of this book. Otherwise, you will be doing a lot of copying as there are a lot of cut and paste pages directly on the backside of another page.
