Sarah's Wish Mar 20, 2008
When tragedy strikes, twelve-year-old Sarah Smith's world is turned upside down. She had known for years of the secrets her mother kept, but now she is wholly responsible for the safety of her mother's "packages". Without a home or a family to care for her, Sarah doesn't know how she will carry on her mother's work, but she knows she must.
Thrust into an adult world she sometimes doesn't understand, Sarah still prays that God will give her a family of her own. She cannot remember her father, but she dreams of the day she will have a new family including a mother and a father to love her and ease the burdens she carries. Granny Evans takes Sarah in until a more permanent solution can be found. In the meantime, Sarah still has the responsibility of safeguarding her mother's secrets.
Sarah's Wish is the first installment in the Sarah series. Set in 19th century Ohio during a time when the Underground Railroad made heroes out of ordinary people, it is a delightful story of love, compassion, and courage. Young readers will enjoy this tale while learning a lot about this historical period in history.
Good book by unknown author--found it at museum in Kansas Dec 29, 2007
Interesting story of a young girl who loses her mother in an accident and continues in her mother's moral quest to help others (don't want to ruin the story by saying more)
Great Family Read Aloud Mar 16, 2007
I have read Sarah's Wish and look forward to the continuation in the second book. It's easy to imagine yourself in the world of Sarah, an American girl living in Ohio in the mid nineteenth century. The wide variety of characters is very interesting! The main character, Sarah, desires to please God and do the right thing for those in her life. There's a bonus right inside the book with a free download of the audio version! I recommend this book not only for a good historical fiction, but also as a supplement to those studying the Underground Railroad.
