Total Mariachi! Nov 27, 2009
This is a complete sourcebook if you are interested in Mexican Mariachi. Everything is covered, from the early roots to contemporary work. It is richly illustrated and beautifully bound, a centerpiece for any library. As far as I know it hasn't been issued in English yet, but if you want to know Mariachi music, you really should learn Spanish anyway!

This is a wonderful history of the mariachi and obviously the culmination of years of research by the author. It is a concise, interesting historical text with many vintage photos, posters, and paintings of mariachi groups. I think it is worth the price for the photos alone. And, it's less expensive on this site than in the Gandhi bookstore in Mexico City! It is written in Spanish, so it's also very good for learners of Spanish who would like to work on their language skills.
For ethnomusicologists, fans of mariachi, and people interested in Mexican culture, I would give this book the highest possible recommendation. It's the only book of it's kind, and a first class effort.
