Overview The Letter to the Collosians offers great insight in to the faith, life, and problems of an eary Christian church. Understanding this letter to be one of Paul's prison epistles but aware of the differences between this and his other writings, Jerry Sumney shows how the church struggled with expressing its new faith in the diverse settings of the Greco-Roman world. Reviews - What do customers think about Colossians: A Commentary (New Testament Library)?
Exceptional Value For Your Investment Dec 23, 2008
I came across this fine commentary during a study of the Colossian epistle and I found it to be an excellent resource.
Sumney incorporates a wide variety of alternative viewpoints into his analysis along with discussions of the historic and cultural setting where appropriate. There is more than sufficient emphasis on the definition and useage of words in the Greek text as well.
Above all, I found Sumney to be a gifted and accessible writer. This is a technical commentary to be sure, but not so technical that a nonprofessional (like myself) could not use it. Sumney never allows the discussion of the most obtuse point to confuse the reader as to how that point fits into the overall message of Colossians. Each section is grounded and connected back to previously covered material in a most effective manner.
I found this commentary to be an exceptional value and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in a greater understanding of this epistle.
