Item description for St. Paul's Ephesus: Texts and Archaeology by Jerome Murphy-O'Connor...

Overview
In this book, renowned scholar Jerome Murphy-O'Connor does for Ephesus what he did for Corinth in his award-winning St. Paul's Corinth. He combs the works of 26 ancient authors for information about ancient Ephesus, from its beginnings to the end of the biblical era. Readers can now picture for themselves this second of the two major centers of Paul's missionary work, with its houses, shops , monuments, and above all the world-renowned temple of Artemis. After presenting the textual and archaeological evidence, the author leads the reader on a walk through Ephesus and describes the history of Paul's years in the city. Although Ephesus has been a ruin for many hundreds of years, readers of this book will find themselves transported back to the days of its flourishing.

Reviews - What do customers think about St. Paul's Ephesus: Texts and Archaeology?

Scholarly yet Readable: Ephesus as Paul knew it  May 27, 2008
St. Paul's Ephesus: Texts and Archaeology

I received this book about 2 weeks before arriving in Kusadasi (Turkey) from where I took a bus to the ancient town of Ephesus. The author had prepared me well. He explains the significance of the temple of Artemis and how Paul would react to it compared to the Temple in Jerusalem. The author explains how the sea has retreated from the ancient city of Ephesus and how the resulting swamp caused people to leave the area for centuries. This is one of the reasons that the city is so well preserved.

In part 2 of the volume the author explains Paul's relationship to the Galatians, Philippians and others as he wrote from prison in Ephesus. Not only does the author shed light on Ephesus, but he also illuminates the Biblical passages connected with Ephesus. Scholarly, yet readable; informative and enjoyable. That pretty much sums it up.

A must for any biblical history shelf  May 4, 2008
Ephesus- a city which has been in ruins for over two thousand years. What was this city, and who were its people? "St Paul's Ephesus: Texts and Archeology" is a journey back through history to this ancient city, following missionary Paul through his journeys and everything that is known about it. Combing over the works of nearly thirty different authors and presenting all the facts he collects from those, Jerome Murphy-O'Connor does his Professor of New Testament job proud. "St. Paul's Ephesus: Texts and Archeology" is a must for any biblical history shelf and anyone who wishes to learn more of this ancient city.
